Belt sender/sensor

Hi - I'm new to the forum and a new, proud owner of a 993 C4. I noticed the fan belt sender/sensor wheel has been zip tied away from the belt. I read on this and other forums that they sometimes start squeaking badly. I'll guess that's why the previous owner tied it up. Regardless, there are no lights on the dash. The connector seems to be properly connected. My question is, why arent there any lights on the dash if that sender is there to warn you of a belt failure? Is there a fuse or other connector somewhere else? The belts are pretty new so it's not an immediate concern. Still... Any help is appreciated.

When the belt breaks the wheel moves closer to the motor and turns on a light. If held back by a zip tie the light will not come on. A cooling fan belt failure can now happen with no dash light warning. The engine will overheat very quickly. The alternator belt can break and the no charge situation will turn on the alt light. The sensor should be replaced asap or you could use the RS single belt conversion instead.

+1...A relatively inexpensive and simple fix...Well worth the cost, effort and time.

FWIW, I have had two sensor failures and zero belt failures. I carry a zip tie now for precisely that reason!

That said, +1 for replacing the sensor.

Thanks. I snipped the tie and found the sensor doesnt squeak, but it does trigger the light even though the belt is just fine. I noticed the connector pin housing is loose. So I'll probably just replace the sensor. Seems pretty easy to do.

When I converted to a single pulley, I took the sensor off and un-plugged it. I placed a metal clip in the end of the plug and taped it up, and zip tied it off and away. Don't miss it.

The sensor can be unplugged and removed easily. 5 mm allen bolt from the bumper side. 3 screws and a easy adjustment.

My fix

After reading all of the posts I ran a trial and error on the sensor. Easy to determine that it was the sensor, just jump the two connection points together and if the light goes out after 15 secs., its in the sensor unit. After removing the unit I opened it up and pulled the micro switch out, checking for any obvious signs of a short or abnormal wear. Then plugged the microswitch directly back into the receiver, and after holding the switch down the warning light went out. Simply adjusting the contact arm resolved the problem. Again, it takes about 15 seconds for the light to go off once the switch is activated, so patience is important when testing the options.

964 fan belt

Two people on this thread mentioned a single belt system. I have a 1993 964 with air. Can I run one belt and still have air?

The conversion involves the pulley on the alternator only.
