1995 993
I am thinking of buying a 993, preferably a 95 so I do not have to deal with NYS cel inspections etc.etc. I have seen a few on Ebay that look interesting, but two of them state that they have had heads off for necessary service around the 50 k mark. I can only presume that they need valve guides and are being repaired to cure smoking or oil consumption ?
My question is.... Is it normal for these engines to need upper end work at this low milage???. I already have an 86 cab, and an 86 Fcar 328. I dont really need another car, but I would like to have a 993 as i like their styling. But I certainly dont need to buy a car that needs work, or will need work between 50 and 80k, other than routine maintenance or possible clutch.I know about the SAI issues etc, but have not heard anything about valve guides or smoking or oil consumption out of the ordinary..What is general consensus on engine durability, and how long before rebuilding is necessary???. Tepps. |

I have a '95 993. When I purchased it, it had 59,000 miles. After a PPI, I drove it from TX to WI. I've had it for approx 2 years and the engine purrs, with no unusual oil consumption and/or smoking. I don't think these engines need to be rebuilt unless they were maintained improperly. There is a 993 on Rennlist that has over 250K and has never had the engine open. He claims it still runs strong. It's true what they say - these engines are bullet proof.

I have 111,000 mi on my 95 and uses no oil and no smoke on start up either. . Some have experienced premature guide failure as have other 1984 to 1998 911,s but most probably exceed 100k before a top end and many go much further.

Old thread, but here's another data point for others...
Our '95 daily driver had 178k and had leaks between cam housings and case. The leaks caused enough smoke that my wife got waved at when she got off the freeway in the mornings. "Hey I think your car is on fire". Very annoying. At $3k for the partial disassembly to fix just these leaks I figured why not pull the heads and just do the top end. The car is running great and no more smoke. For the record, the auxiliary air jets for smog air injection were found to be very coked up. Also chain guides were very worn/falling apart. Glad no OBD2 on the '95s. Our experience, Cooper |

Do a PPI and leak down test and should be good to go. These engines are bullet proof. Buy it and don't look back.
