Timing chain/ valve covers Magnesium?

I have someone inquiring about purchasing some 964 engine parts but He only wants aluminum valve covers and timing chain covers. Any ideas how to tell if these parts are aluminum or magnesium?

$5 says those valve covers are mag. Color, mostly- mag is usually more grey in appearance vs. alu's silver.

Did the 964 ever come w/ alu VCs?

What year is your car? The mag valve covers are a gold color. Your lowers have a bit of that color but your uppers look aluminum. I believe the last couple MY 964s (93-94 maybe) used aluminum covers.

Also, I'm not sure about timing covers tho.

Also, what's up w/ your crossover pieces being metal? The crossovers on my '91 C2 are plastic construction.

I stand corrected by my own pics. My upper covers did look rather silver too.

Weigh the valve cover. Then get two buckets- one taller than the other and the short one being larger in diameter. Put the tall bucket inside the short, wide bucket and fill the tall one with water until it is overflowing (add water slowly as it nears the top). Now soak up the water in the catch bucket with a rag. Now put the valve cover in the water. Now take the tall bucket out and measure what has overflowed using a graduated beaker or graduated cylinder. Divide the weight by the volume of water to get the density. Compare to Al and Mg.

Put valve cover in sawdust or dry very carefully and coat with WD-40 to prevent corrosion.

92 and later 964's have aluminum upper and lower valver covers. The last 2 numbers on the part number will be 01 for the magnesium covers and 02 for the aluminum covers if I remember correctly. I have a 91 that originally came with the mag covers and I swapped for the later aluminum covers due to corrosion and leaks. The aluminum covers were raw and not painted from the factory as well so that is another indicator of what you have. The mag covers were an ugly brown/gold color.

Thanks guys, I think the lowers may be aluminum but the uppers look like they may be mag. The lowers have welding done for oil return lines for a twin turbo setup.

not sure why the crossover tubes are aluminum. These parts are off a high HP twin turbo engine which i parted out due to have internal damage when i purchased it.
