broken retaining strap - will rivets work?
Hi all,
was so proud of myself replacing the fan bearing - painting the housing and putting it back together without drama. Spoke too soon !! I was doing up the retaining strap - wasn't even mildly tight and SNAP, the left hand strap broke just behind where it folds over !! Talk about annoying ! So, since i reside in the middle of no where and a replacement strap (can you even get one?) would be weeks away - I am wondering if this might work. Drill two holes in the broken off piece, then two corresponding holes in the strap and then rivet the two pieces together. Given the bolt is so long, I think it might work. Question though...it seems incredible to me that the whole alternator housing relies on this strap to stay in place. Has anyone ever done this sort of repair? Or should I just forget driving the cars for a few weeks and order the part? I also see there is some sort of pin holding the bottom part in which looks like a real cow to get out too? Does anyone have the Pelican part number please? I am searching under 'retaining strap' isn't that what it is called? What do you guys think? |

I think you need to post more details about your car and maybe a picture of the offending area...
