Collapsible oil tubes question?

I have my engine out and on engine stand. My question is. Is it possible to replace oil tubes with collapsible tubes without removing the heat exchangers? I've soaked mine two days with WD 40. Studs are backing out when torqued too much. Any advice appreciated.

Yes, it is possible, probably slightly more difficult. Since you have the engine out I think that should make things quite a bit easier though. Now really would be a good time to address those heat exchanger nuts though. It is actually not a bad thing that the studs are coming out...I would replace them and install all new hardware with liberal anti-seize. You never know when you might need to drop the exhaust.

+1, that is about 100 times better than a broken stud.

Keep going and if all 12 comes out that way, go buy yourself a Super Ball lottery ticket

Thanks Justin for your response. I have a oil tube and thought about buying three more. This gives me confidence to do it. As far as studs backing out. I'm afraid I'll get to the last couple bolts and break a stud. Then I'm up a creek.

I removed my heat exchangers several times while the engine was in the car. One of them must be bent a little bit because the barrel head nut does not go through the hole directly to the stud, so I have to put it up there by hand and then stick the wrench up through the hole to get to it. I didn't break any studs removing the heat exchangers, but several did turn out. I considered that to be a good thing and replaced the studs that came out (2 or 3 of them) and all of the nuts. When I had to remove the heat exchangers the second time (one of the O-rings on the collapsible oil return tube I had put in had split and a gallon of oil drained out onto my garage floor overnight after I took it for a test drive), it was fantastically easy. Good luck and enjoy knowing that the next time you need to remove them it won't require any tricks.

wesley, where are you located? you should include that info in your user cp. Pelicans are all over the place.

btw, mapp gas is much hotter than regular propane, several heat cycles should help. Heat the area around the stud, not the stud itself.

Yes Justin. I need to complete my profile on the cp. I just forgot about going back and doing it. I'm in Muskogee ok. Not much porsche help in this town. Now if I had a dodge 1 ton with a 8" lift and mosquitoe killing stacks smoking exhaust I'd have all the help I'd need I do have a bottle of map. I will try it. Thanks.

Excellent discussion, my engine is out on stand as well and planning to take heads to shop for exhaust valve guide replace. Prepared to heat studs with MAPP, had not thought about studs actually backing out, replacing would be good.
