964 Transmission Swap

Hi, I am new to this forum. I have a 91 964 with tiptronic trans that I wish to change. I'd love to have a 993 6 spd swapped into the car for my driving pleasure. My question is; before I dive into this project, is there anything that I need to prepare myself mentally and financially? Or, is it even possible to do the swap due to all those electronics involved? Any kind words will be greatly appreciated.

I have owned my 964 for more than 10 years, and it currently has only 35K miles on it, if this information helps. The low mileage is due lack of interest as it is an automatic.

It is possible and done a couple of times. But don't do it.
1: Your car is a low mileage 964 and worth a lot if you leave it stock as it is.
2: 993 6 SPD Transmission, Pedal Cluster, Cluthc, Flywheel , hydraulic llines and.... are needed to do the swap. The 993 6spd runs somewhere between $4500 and $6000 if you find a good one.
I think the parts your need will be around $8-10.000 + labour.

If you really want a 6 SPD tranny insetad of the tip than sell your car and buy a 993. I even think you can get a 993 with a bit higher mileage than yours for the same money you would get for your 964.

Wait a minute... that's it? You're giving up already??
Are you still going to do it?
I hope you do.

I am yet to find a thread and report of anyone that has done one. I'd like to do one too...but again, most opinions are "it's not worth it"... "it's too hard".. "your car is worth more unmolested"... "sell it and buy an actual manual"...

OK... it isn't worth it financially.. but who cares?

LA Dismantlers sell a "kit" with all the bits.

You could go down in history (on the net anyway) as the first person to follow through!
I'm too gutless and scared to do it.. and too poor... I think if you did it to your low mileage car, you would never sell it...

Please do it.
Please.

There was an article in Excellence 3-4 years ago about a guy who did this. He also had a thread about it on RL as he did it. Think he may have posted here too.

But if you are not a DIY guy the cost is no joke. Parts and labor will run you close to half what a 964 driver is worth. Now obviously a low mileage car is worth more, which makes the argument against even stronger. Path of least resistance is obviously sell original car and get a nice MT driver. That is unless you are really attached to your current car.

Not worth it for a 'stock' configuration. Avoid the 'kit' and source your parts on the classifieds, IMHO.

I went with a new 'cup'/rs clutch, rs shifter, new bushings, the works. The shop kept the old electronics (TCU disconnected) in place but spliced in the speed/ref sensor, and such. The conversion suits the nature of my car.

I understand the US 6sp is not beneficial for performance. I went with the 5sp G50/03.

Thank you all for the response. I will dig further into this before turning a wrench. I like the car but it is very boring to drive. I use manual shifting almost exclusively but not even half the joy of driving my old E30 (regretfully sold) with a manual transmission.

We converted a 964 tiptronic to a 5 speed last year. It was a fun project... It is not an inexpensive conversion....

Cheers

Core gearboxes have gotten really expensive. Singer is building their cars mostly on Tips. That requires the gearbox conversion. Last I spoke to them they were looking for more than a dozen transmissions.

Interesting... i guess that's because all the tiptronics are C2 and its easier to get one of those and convert, than find a C2 Manual at a decent price?

Yep, the tips are cheaper cars and a lot of the Singers are 6spd conversions anyway. So even 5spd cars sometimes get the gearbox yanked.
