Mistakingly applied Dow molykote 111 to trans input shaft?
I put molykote 111 on my input shaft. Tubes look so much alike I didn't notice. Haven't installed engine yet. Should I separate trans from engine and relube with correct Sachs grease? Or will this be ok ? Thanks in advance

I would take it apart and use the correct grease....Those two lubricants have completely different chemical characteristics and applications.

Thanks TMc. I Separated the trans and swabed the old stuff out. Regreased correct grease. Engines in. I'll call it a night... Right after this beer. Thanks for the help.

Yes. I picked it up from rennsport yesterday. Got in to much if a hurry and grabbed the wrong grease. Slowed me down. Need to get out there and button things up today... Figure out your slippedge problem?

At least you caught the grease issue before the engine went back into the car. If I have to drop my engine again, it'll cost me waiting for another case of oil which I have to order from Amazon plus the work of dropping it. But I haven't even started the car yet. Today is nice but I had to haul wheels and tires to the shop for the other car, so if the weather holds out I'll take the 964 after lunch and see what happens. I'm operating on the que sera sera theory that my worst-case scenario is needing a new clutch disc, which isn't much of a cost in addition to the time and oil involved in removing the engine. So I'll just drive it softly as much as I can for a while and then see if the thing still slips.
How much faster was your second engine install compared to your first? ![]() |

Ordering oil from amazon? Never considered that. I'm Sure it's cheaper. All I did yesterday was get trans on and engine mounted. Hope you don't have to go back in with a new disc.

It's the only way I can get Brad Penn. I gave up trying to go the 120 miles to the nearest dealer and also realized that it's about the same price from Amazon as buying Rotella T6 locally. T6 is probably just fine in my car, but Brad Penn is almost certainly good and if the price is the same then there's no harm in waiting a few days to get each case I order.

I've never tried brad penn. Here a lot of good about it though. I'm Using mobil 1 15-50. Just tested my new clutch out. I had no idea mine was as bad as it was till tonight. Hopefully you won't have to drop your engine again. But if you do you'll be amazed how much faster it goes. I bought a new clean oil container and saved my oil ( 5 minutes run time )

That's smart. I normally drain the tank into a 5-gallon pail directly so I can get one of those but the crankcase requires a lot more work with a jack to get a pail underneath. Did you drain both the second time? The manual says you only have to drain the crankcase if you are overhauling the engine, but I don't know how accurate that theory is when it turns into practice.

I just drained the crank case and zip tied a sandwich bag around the oil lines when taken off.

Did you get your car back on the road? See my other thread for the apparent cause of my clutch slipping problem: ring gear installed backwards (cut-away side should face the transmission, not the engine as I had it seated on the flywheel). Second engine removal took almost exactly half the time of the first one, which was nice but still a chore. I hope you're out enjoying the car this weekend. You've definitely earned it.

I've been watching your other thread. i feel you're pain fellow porschephile. it's a great education though. What I did wrong is etched in my brain. As yours will be too. Yes my cars on the road. Great to have it back. Thanks. We get sharper off each other's mishaps. That's a good thing. Happy future motoring!

Definitely good to learn from others' mistakes. We make enough of our own as it is, right? Glad your car is back on the road. I think I can put the transmission back on the engine tomorrow after a meeting and then maybe get them back in the car Tuesday evening. Debating putting in new Mintex brake pads since my Raybestos track pads squeal so loud. But maybe I'll just put on the final muffler bypass I got and with straight pipes I won't even hear the brakes.
