Engine cover deteriorated padding at spark plugs
The panel that mounts under the engine tins made of plastic has a silver metal coating on one side and a foam padding on the other. The foam is brittle and breaking apart. I plan just to remove it all. Doesn't look like one can buy this from porsche separate from the panel itself. Any issue with just removing padding and remounting? Is this a heat protection or weather protection?

Actually, I think it was more for sound deadening than anything else. When the 964 was introduced, Porsche was forced to go to great lengths to make it comply with European noise regulations. These panels along with the under pan and the curved-blade fan were all part of the effort to quiet the engine. I think that there is some heat shielding, but it's more important when the transmission and engine under pans are in place.

Makes sense on the noise dampening. My car has the bottom skid plate under the engine installed. What's the general concensus on whether or not to keep it on or take it off? I believe some have mentioned it can cause excess heat.

I have read the same thing over the years - the under pan holds heat in the engine. My 964 already had the pan removed when I bought it 11 years ago, so I don't have any baseline to compare temperatures to. But, considering that the under pan covers up ther heat exchangers, I have to believe that a fair amount of heat is trapped inside when the engine is shut off after a lengthy ride.
