Porsche Crest Power Steering failure

Hi guys,
I just bought a '95 993 C4 with 150K on the clock. Drove it home to Tacoma, WA from Irvine, CA. The car drove fine the whole way. A growling front differential was the only issue, and that was a known problem from the PPI. Driving yesterday I heard a whine/howl when turning at low speed, and the car became increasing difficult to turn. I got home with no power steering and fluid dripping from the front of the car. Is my power steering shot? Did I ruin it driving home? Can I fill the reservoir and limp it to the garage? Any help would be appreciated.
Layno

Sounds as if your steering rack is leaking and depleted the power steering fluid... Read about it here:

I did the sam thing last year but the other direction. Bought mine in Salem and drove it back to the sacramento area. Mine was leaking to the point I filled the resevoir half way home. The rebuild is a reasonable DYI if your handy. I got the rebuild kit for the rack and reinstalled with no further problems. The rack may be your growling diff in the PPI.
If it is the diff pm me - I know where a good used one is.
Good luck and welcome to the fold.

What kind of fluid did you use?
Was you rack damaged from low fluid?

I bought Pentosin CHF202 Power Steering From Pelican. It takes about a quart. Mine was leaking when I bought the car, I think rubber parts start failing after 18 years no matter how many miles. I used the kit from the link above plus replaced the bellows fro Pelican. You will want to remove all the plastic underbody and clean the oil off. No problems with the pump although a rebuild kit is available if needed.
Post some photos - my first 993 was a C4, very solid feel on the corners.

Factory calls for Pentosin CHF11S (There may be a later/different number on this now).

when you say it is dripping at the front, how far at the front?

I'm probably wrong, but is there a hose that goes across the front, right behind the bumper? I remember having a leak from mine right at the front, but cannot remember if it was ATF hosing, or PS hosing (my car was a tiptronic)....

Checked the reservoir. Bone dry! Filled it and it worked just fine. Tech said that the pumps are pretty hardy and probably wasn't damaged. I'm going to get under it today and look for any obvious leaks.
