"best" muffler for 964 ?

Hi,
We have had plenty of experience with the earlier air cooled cars , installing all brands of mufflers. But when it comes to the 964, we can use a little guidance.

The car is going go be daily driven, and most likely a sport cat installed.

We like the idea of saving weight and replacing both intermediate and final muffler, but absolutely HATE the drone that some offerings have in the 2800-3500 range where this car will "live" most of the time.
We do have experience with installing the primary bypass. We have also removed the final muffler leaving the primary, which just makes too much noise. But the owner wants a slightly sportier sound.

Of course this is subjective, so your input is valuable in helping us make this expensive modification

thanks
Dave

Dave, I have the primary bypass only with the original cat and secondary muffler left in place. It's a great sound, no drone, not too loud. In the world of Porsche exhaust modifications it's probably the best sound with the lowest cost. Having said that I'm thinking of going with Fabspeed cat and dual out muffler. It's probably a sportier sound although at a cost of around $2,000 compared to a $100 pipe for the primary bypass.

Maybe others can chime in about Fabspeed. I'd be interested in hearing what people have to say.

I have the Fabspeed dual outlet (Sport) system with their cat bypass. Drone and volume were an issue until I put a baffle on the left side exhaust outlet

Really its just too loud with both sides open, I still set off some car alarms but the sound is good..

I have a primary bypass (cuppipe) with 200cell sport cat installed. It's def more aggressive then just the cuppipe and stock cat. If you plan to install the sport cat, I think you'll be suprised how good and sporty that setup will sound.

no drone with the cup pipe style bypass.
sounds great to me. drilled airbox completes the sound.

Has anyone had any problems with smog in CA with a sport cat?

I've had both the Fabspeed dual system (AKA: Dansk) with sport cat and then switched to the B&B dual system, also with sport cat... no issues with CA smog, at least for me. When they do a "visual" they see a legit cat and what looks like a factory system, but clearly these guys aren't that knowledgeable on P-cars. Both a little loud, but not terrible. BTW... have the Dansk system if anyone's interested.

Great- some very good input guys. Thank you
we can do the dual pipe outlet by getting a fiberglass bumper extension that mirrors the passenger side detail.

I used the FVD fibreglass rear bumper piece and while it is ok there is another one out there that is made of some material that is more flexible, I dont recall who handles it but if I find it I will post here

That fiberglass isnt going to take much more than a tap to fracture..

i have the m&m/fvd brombacher sound version single outlet. basically no drone but it screams when you get on it. i had a secondary bypass alone and a primary + secondary prior to this and it sounds much better (equal length headers are wonderful) and has a lot less drone.

Fabspeed

Bought my C4 with a BB race exhaust. Sounded good on test drive, couldn't stand it (wife wouldn't ride in it....hmmm). I bought stock manifolds and cat. Was going to buy stock mufflers but nearly choked at the cost. Bought a dual ot Fabspeed and love it. Fairly quiet but "barks" when you give it some gas.

Good to hear.
I'm planning Fabspeed sport cat + muffler soon. Primary bypass is good, but lookin' for a little more...

I have the same. I have put the exhaust on both 964 cars I have owned.
Its great. Remember, cup cars used this with a j pipe.

I am running stock heater boxes with dansk 100 cell cat and magnaflow 3" in 3" out muffler along with a cup air box and Dansk 4" round exhaust tip. Dynoed at 291 RWHP and 280 RWTq with a custom tuned chip. It is noticeably stronger than most 964's I have driven and have been told has a little less grunt than some 3.8 builds. It has a great sound does not drone at all however is a bit louder than removing the primary. It is louder outside the car than inside. The 4" tip and cup airbox amplify the sound so you can play with its sound. I find I can actually listen to the radio without any issue or cranking the volume but it sounds so good I never turn it on.

I would expect it to be less loud if you retained the 400 cell stock cat. Also emissions are well below max levels even with the 100 cell cat.

This setup offers a truly distinct sound better than any aftermarket I have heard and still sound like a 964. At the track I could always tell when my wife was coming around the bend but LRP safe.

where to buy 100 cell cat?

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but better than starting new...
Where can we buy a 100 cell or even 200 cell cat for the 964?
Currently my car has a Fabspeed cat bypass, but I'm not a big fan of the smell and starting to feel environmentally guilty...
Mike
