Convert 964 to pre-1974

Anyone have done that conversion, without bying new front and rear wings? How did you do it, and how does it look? (Merly thinking of the turning lights and rear light possitions).

Greatful for any helpful information. Looking at converting a 964 cabriolet.

Regards, Rickard of Sweden

The Long-Hood (1973 and older) is substantially different in lots of metal. It can be done on 74-89 911's reasonably well, but even then you need a different hood, fenders, rear panel, bumpers, etc. etc. The 964 chassis is much different, so even more complicated. If you are looking for a partial backdate, I suppose it "could" be done, but then you'd end up with a odd-ball car.

Anything is possible with enough Krona though.

Wow! That would take a lot of money and work!

Given the way prices have dropped, I'd say you could come fairly close to buying a pre-1974 car for the money you would have to spend to convert a 964 to a pre-1974 look and in the end you would have a car that was neither an pre-74 nor a 964.

Why not just buy a pre-'74 and have two nice cars?

I understand Rickard's desire....early car look with the mechanics of a 964. I've seen a few and would love to do it myself. Google PS AutoArt in the UK or check out this RSR conversion.

1990 Porsche Carrera 4 AWD RSR Conversion « BaT – The best vintage and classic cars for sale online

I think there's too much "under the skin" to get a true narrow body look to your car, but an RS or RSR look should be achievable. Like others have said, it just takes cash!

Edit: More on that car here: Update C4 RSR Project

Hi and thank you for links and comments.

Why doing it? Good question. Looking for a better allround Porsche than todays 1987 cabriolet (any one knows where to find hard top to older 911?).
And a 4WD isn't all that bad in these parts of the world. But the 964 is in my opinion not the greatest looking 911.
So after reading an article i 911 and Porsche World about back-dating and last year finding the Porsche Singer I thought I should check out how difficult it is.

So thank you for the links to "Porsches Doc's" project in 2005/2006. Lots of interesting information. Looks like it could be done for 25-30.000$. As long as one doesn't have the the urge to build a 100% replica of a Singer or an RS-73.

So long for now, and thanks again.
Sweet Porsche Dreams. /Rickard

PS Autoart makes panels that let you do it without moving the front bulkhead.
PS AutoArt : Paul Stephens | Porsche Specialist | Suffolk UK

Not 100% the same look as a real longnose conversion, but it's good enough for many.

actually the Singer is more or less a 964 hiding in a longhood. For a mere 300K.

I think I messaged the poster some time ago.
You can do this, it's possible, but the narrow bodied 964 is still wider then a pre-74' narrow.
So in short it is always easier to go wider then narrower. Sure, this is possible.

If I recall on the Singer, the Singer is infact not a tride and true narrow bodied pre-74' styled car. Correct? I haven't looked at the car in a long time. You can do this kind of work, but the key is having quality work carried out. Depending on the firms solutions some types of work are forever.

Anyways, good luck.

We have a RSAmerica (964) that is in process of making a 73 RS style. We kept the front and rear fenders, had them modified to early 73 look. The front trunk floor was wedge cut to match the position of the bottom of the RS front spoiler. Then we had to install a pair of custom coolers in the fenders, as the oe cooler was too large. The a/c condenser fan assy went inside the front trunk and blows out thru duct holes into the fender wells pressurizing the areas into the coolers. The front center 73 RS opening supplies half the cold air to the trunk for the a/c and half to the oil coolers. Rear tailamp areas were backdated to support 69-89 tailamp buckets and lenses. The flares were subtly recontoured to more of a 73RS shape. The rocker panels were modified to incorporate early torsion bar holes, smoothed rockers, and even jack point supports of the earlier chassis were installed.
since this car is going to a hot climate, there was no need for heat, so the a/c lines were replaced and rerouted thru the driver side rocker. Pass side oil lines are flex black cloth aircraft from tank to the front coolers
Overall its a lot of work to do the narrower body version as you can hide some of these details when building a 930 / 73 rsr width version.

Yes, why???The essence of driving an origianal early car is completely lost, other than the visual impact, sorry I don't see any merit to it.
