996 window problem

Hi guys - I wonder if anyone can help me with this problem. I have a 1999 996 with a driver's side window problem. The problem is that with the door closed, if I try to put the window all the way up, it usually doesn't work - gets to the top but then comes back down a bit. The window going up and down also makes a nasty grinding noise, especially near the bottom of the window travel.

I disassembled the door panel and examined the mechanism. Couldn't see anything wrong, but the grinding noise seems to be coming from the motor or the front slider.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Dan

I can't help other than to suggest that you check out the Rennlist 996 forum. It's VERY active and has a lot of people there who are intimately familiar with these cars. They can probably find an answer for you.

sounds like it may be one of two things....but these are just guesses.

1) Window Regulator will usually make a grinding sound when it's going.

2) may be an issue with the door handle? When you lift it, the window comes down about 1/2 inch and then goes back up on it's own automatically and very quickly. Perhaps there is some kind of issue there?

Good Luck.

This is a classic case of regulator failure. The replacement part will cost you about $200 and it will take you about an hour to R&R the old one.
