Why is my 01 911 Losing Coolant?

2001 911, C2, six speed, 60K miles, red light is flashing. Engine running fine, temp gets to about 200F and stays constant. added about 2.5 quarts of coolant. light went off. day later, red light was flashing. coolant tank is again low. no sign of coolant in the driveway. no odd smells either. no sign of coolant on the underside of the car. how can I find the leak? Any suggestions or thoughts on this problem?

Check the header tank for cracks. It maybe that the coolant leaking out never makes it to the floor so grab a flashlight and have a really good look underneath the coolant tank for any signs of coolant leaking. You might aslo want to check the cap and just make sure that isn't playing up. Other than that, if you want to find the leak you will probably need to get the cooling system pressure tested, but that might involve a trip to the dealer. Even so, peace of mind!

check your dipstick. If it is milky your coolant is mixing with the oil - this is of course bad. Do the check above as well.

Oil and coolant are mixing inside the engine. Not good. Seems this happens to the 3.4L. I'm very disappointed in Porsche.

Intermix problem?

Beech: If you are in fact having an intermix problem....my sympathies go out to you. Every time I read of this failure happening to another Porsche owner, I start wondering about the longevity of my car....sort of like waiting for the other shoe to drop. It's a damn shame really to have a car like this with such a common failure problem....and not just a problem, but a problem that Porsche no longer is willing to help defray costs for.....

From what I've read, your only option is a new engine once the intermix failure scenario occurs and coolant permeates the bearings, bushings etc. Really sorry......

Chuck

I have the same problem with my '99 with 37K miles. I add about one pint of coolant every two months or so. Problem started about 18 months/10K miles ago. My local Porsche guy (Helmut, a real German) says no coolant in oil, pressure tests good.
It is at the dealer today for other items so I will have them check the coolant problem as well.
I will post their conclusions.
