Some questions about the 996
Hello All,
I am considering a 2002-2004 996 and had some questions that I am hoping you can help me with. 1. Is there a service manual similar to the Bentley or 101 projects book like there is for the 911SC and carrera? Or do you have to use the factory manual which I imagine is expensive. 2. Do any of you have toddler/booster seats in the rear? If so, which brand/make fits back there? 3. Have any of you had to replace the RMS or IMS bearing yourself? I watched a couple of videos on youtube and it does not seems too bad but I expect the tough part is removing the engine. Has anyone removed their own engine? I am wondering compared to the aircooled engine how difficult this is to do. Thanks

Porsche does (did?) make a seat belt interlock kit that allowed use of child/baby seats in the front, so consider that. And yes, many have found brands of car seats that work in the back. I know there are some threads about this very subject on that other board, rennlist.

Wayne is supposed to be working on a 101 Projects book for the 996 to come out this year. If it's as good as the one for the air cooleds, it'll be worth every penny and then some.
Here's one article on IMS bearing retrofitting, but there are many more out there: The Porsche Boxster 986 Enthusiast Guide: Intermediate Shaft (IMS) Bearing Info and Fixes

To replace the RMS and IMS bearing you need only remove the transmission which is pretty straight forward.
The Porsche 996-The Essential Companion is a pretty good reference for tune up and repairs.
