Personally I prefer manual, however, I just added an 02 turbo Tip to my inventory and I must say I like it. If you are planning to track the car you may find the Tip a bit boring?

Although many Porsche guys have expressed their opinions on this topic and even though many prefer manual, many have also stated that unless you are a very experienced driver you couldn't shift a 6 speed gear box faster that the Tip shifts.

If you are not planning on track or DE events then unless you are looking for resale value, take advantage.

Either way, enjoy the ride and remember "Drive Hard, Smile A Lot".

This question can only be answered by your own preference.....

Me?......6 speed is the fun way to drive.......

If my commute was stop and go....different story....

the "good" price may give you a hint.

Is everything else kosher?
Maybe it's harder to sell it with the tip, which maybe to your advantage now.

In the end, it's your preference (as it's your money).

Go drive a C2 manual and then a C4 tip. The C4 feels much heavier, handling wise.

That was exactly my experience too. I wanted a 911 for the incomparable steering feel and 'aliveness' of the driving experience. Putting 150+ pounds over the front wheels and connecting them to the driveline degrades that feel.

(While AWD may be technically 'faster' in some cases, I don't make a living by racing so its all about how much fun I'm having behind the wheel!)

They are sales proof. That's why the price is so low. Nobody wants one.

That said, I rather like a tip on the track. You'll likely get faster lap times with the tip. the car comes alive at speed and shifting is lighting quick even though it really is just a torque converter automatic unlike PDK.

However, driving around town with the tip is booooooring. The car feels like it weighs three times as much. It will default start from second gear and just drives like a pig. You may as well be in a big fat mercedes.

A 6 speed on the other hand is fun the second you start moving. Just going to the grocery is a blast.

I made the mistake of getting a tip as my first one and regretted it every second I had it. Replaced it with a six speed a few months later. That was a PITA, let me tell you, because nobody wanted to take it on trade or buy it.

Also, it gets really old having people say "OMG that is a sweet car! Oh it's a tiptronic? That's cool, I guess"

I guess I'm happy on the road less traveled. My 996 is a tip, and my 3.2 is a targa... just don't fit in anywhere...

Maybe there's a support group somewhere for the rodney dangerfield's of porsche?

I have a 996 C4 tip Cab. Wore my knees out skiing. The better half who drives it occasionally wore out her knees standing on her feet all day at work. And I always have my 66 with, can we still call it, "Standard" transmission?

Tip vs Manual

I do like my 5 speed manual more so than my Tiptronic however the Tip is fun to manipulate the steering shift at highway speeds and it is pleasant in traffic. The best of both worlds!

I have the TIP in my 2004 and I enjoy it. It is the best of both worlds.

However, there is one issue to be aware of. It's more expensive to take out if you have too. Like for an RMS/IMS upgrade. Lot's of stuff to remove and maneuver.

It's supposed to be a very strong trans and it was built by Mercedes Benz. The MB label is on the trans itself on the back right hand corner.

My understanding is the RMS didn't fail as often in the TIP equip'd cars due to shaft alignment.

That was my understanding too. And I hope the rumors or statistics are correct!

I found it interesting that there is a history of Porsche and MB. I'm a fan of both cars.

The MB label for the TipTronic:

Actually the Powerglide was a very strong transmission. It was use extensively in dragsters. Along with a strong Ford 9" rear axle.
