2000 996 C2 3.4 to 3.6 Swap Shop recommendations
Hello everyone,
I have a 2000 996 C2 with a dead motor. I was able to source a 2003 996 3.6L. It has about 92K miles on it. 2000 has a manual transmission but the donor had a tiptronic gearbox. I searched but couldn't find any clear details on how to do the swap, just bits and pieces and it could be done. The 2003 came with the transmission and DME. No interior wiring. I will post that for sale soon. Can anyone recommend a shop in California that has experience in doing the swap? The car (shell) is in Nor Cal with engine and gearbox out. I don't mind transporting it down to so cal for a good deal. Bay Area prices for anything are crazy. The 3.4 spun a #2 rod bearing and the crank was damaged as well. Mechanic took it apart and didn't put it back together. Rebuild estimate was about 18K. Please post your recommendations and approximate cost for the swap. Thanks and Happy New Year! |

No affiliation to the shops, but I would reach out to TRE located in Van Nuys and/or TLG in North Hollywood. Both are excellent shops that can likely do this work. Best of luck!

As a matter of personal preference, I would just put the 3.4L back. Too many things to consider when taking on a non-stock engine, and it is almost always sales proof after that on a 996.
My answer has always been "if you want a bigger engine, sell yours and buy another car."

Thanks everyone. I think it happens to everyone here for the most part, depending on the day and time. I want to swap then not want to do it.
Dick Shift, I'll email you. Dmitry, Thanks. Will contact them regarding estimate. Thanks yelcab1, good advice. I'm planning on playing with this one for a while and start saving for a turbo. I also posted in the for sale for trade section. |

Talk to Hergesheimer or Visions. They are both M96 specialists. The ships Dimi mentioned are more air cooled focused.
