914 Spark plug index direction?
Anybody ever done a dyno test to see what the best direction to aim the plugs at is? I've been told to index the plugs toward the exhaust valve on my 2.0L 914, any thoughts?
Thanks Stacy C/S 914 2.0L A/SP 911 3.0L |

i used to do this on my 911. i was told same thing, opening facing exhaust valve. problem was, half the time you pulled the plugs, the damn washers fell out. PITA to fish out. and if you can't get it out, you have to have a log that says which size washer for which cylinder.
from chevy era, i was told 2-4hp gain on a small block.

Exhaust direction it is then, Thanks!
Ever notice how far the sparkplug sticks into the combustion chamber? I always wondered if it is engineered this way for a proper flame front or if bringing the shank back flush to the head (with the tip still out in the combustion chamber) would work any better... Displacement would be up at least ![]() Stacy |

It would have an effect on the compression ratio, because it would change the "fixed" volume at the top of the cylinder. It would increase that volume by a couple of CCs, which will reduce your compression ratio. Most of us 914 folks are trying to increase ours, so.... --DD

Hmmm... Maybe somebody should patent an idea that uses the same principal as the expanding drywall wall anchors in the sparkplug hole to gain compression then?
![]() I can see the infommercial now... Raise compression without taking your engine apart. Act now and we will include the helicore repair kit for free! ![]() I'm not greedy, I'll just take a 1% royalty for the idea ![]() Stacy |
