R3 H&N Device Feedback
I'm in the market for a H&N restraint device. My belt geometry doesn't conform to the requirements for HANS. (Their belt geometry requirements are pretty stringent. I wonder how many people using the HANS device have belt geometry that doesn't pass muster?) I instruct at PCA DE's and I'd like the device to easily go car to car with me. Pretty much leads me to the R3 and only the R3. To be truthful, I like the ISAAC concept better, but that won't go car to car with me. Anyway, I'd like to hear from R3 users in regards to comfort, ease of going from car to car, and, if you use a Chatterbox, is there interference between the device and the helmet mounted communicator box?
(Yes, I did search the archives. I didn't see much user feedback. Of course, trying to search for just "R3" does cause some problems.) Thanks, Ed Cavalier |

I have the R3. It takes some getting used to, but that is more due to the nature of H&N restraint rather than the device itself. I have not tried it in a student car, but use it in my car with the seat insert. It is very comfortable, and quick to release should I need to turn my head. By contrast I had the Isaac and I did not care for it. I have not tried a Hans.
My only complaint right now is it is difficult to turn my head to the right to see my passenger side mirror. Once I get a 5-panel wink rear view installed this will not be an issue. |

My buddy is a PCA instructor uses the R3 and wouldn't go on the track w/o it. It's very easy to go from car to ccar he says.

nostatic is right. I installed a convex mirror (I like it better than the wink mirror) no issues at all.
There is a 30day return period if you do not like it. I have not had one returned yet. pm me with any ?'s Thanks, Chad

I hope I'm not being a ***** but: the R3 isn't your only choice. The Hutchens II meets your requirements. I went with it and I like it. I Like how it not only has the solid part like the R3 but also webbing around the legs that makes me more confident. I like the sideways support too.
http://www.hutchensdevice.com/home/hutch2.html If anything, compare it and it'll make your choice of the R3 stronger. |

I just got one, and used it with a student... also installed the chatterbox, no problems.... on a forced air helmet....
it does take some getting use to. its a little noisy with the metal clips on the helmet, (thats was my biggest complaint), and does restrict head turn, But its ok, I can see the students eyes, and peddles, but its a little more work. I put the helment and r3 on as one unit. and now get in the car with the helmet on... before I sat in the car belted up then put the helmet on last... so I had to re learn that routine. but it seems pretty good... best I can find for my needs. oh, I also use a toroso belt on 3 pt seatbelts...not sure how that would work with h&n but it saves my back every session. |

I just purchased an R3 and used it for the first time last weekend. After the first two run sessions I was ready to throw it out the window. BUT, after some minor adjustments to the position of it on my body and a few more run sessions, by the end of the weekend I did not even notice it was there. It does take some some getting use to. The best advantage is being able to go from my car to a students and not worrying whether they have 5 pt harness or not. I would not go with out it again!

Sold the Hans and got the R3 from Chad.
I expect they work the same, they feel the same when racing. R3 is not shoulder belt dependent, I bought into the multiple hit R3 marketing. R3 can be used when instructing. Did not enjoy instructing while my HANs had to stay in the trailer. Chad was great to deal with too. Support a fellow racer. ![]() |
