Right side "restraint" net install pictures?
 

Has anyone done a right side window net install on a 911 recently? I'm trying like hell to figure out the best placement. I've done two on BMW's but none on the 911. THe most optimum position would be to mount the forward portion to the top of the dash, but I am concerend that a large fender washer won't cut it because of the force angles.

My second thought is a steel cable running thru the dash but it just doesn't look very clean.

Chris, I don't know if this is helpful, but I'm pretty sure I've seen a picture somewhere online of someone who strapped the front end through the clock mounting hole. I don't know if you've got an oil light in there or an air duct, but if not, perhaps that's an option?

What about to the knee bar of your cage? Might be too low I suppose, but it's sturdy!

I couldn't see a good way to do the net in my car so I got the seat. It does make a removeable steering wheel a requirement as it's much harder to get out of the car with the new seat.

I think it's silly that NASA has added the requiremnt for the net or seat but doesn't have the requirement for a HANS (or equivalent).

I ended up running a 3/16" steel aircraft cable thru the dash and into the front strut bar. The knee bar positioned the net too low. I'll post pictures later.

NASA is going to be requiring a HANS device shortly.. Or at least GTS is.

This is a non-trivial deal. There seem to be several choices for nets. HMS Motorsports sells the Safety Solutions/BSR net(s) and recommend that type for Porsches and BMW's. When I last spoke with them, they were working on something with Schroth (they are the US Schroth importer) that would offer more mounting flexibility. They have a lot or BMW experience... not as much Porsche experience. A lot of safety experience from all forms of amateur and pro racing.

I know of one local fellow that does excellent cage and fab work, and he has done several of the Safety Solutions/BSR nets (acquired from HMS) in Porsche 911s. He has gone through the clock hole to some part of the forward cage structure. He is scheduled to do another install soon, and promised to send me pics.

When I contacted Safety Solutions/BSR, they recommended their Corvette C5R version for Porsches. I am not sure whether that is the version sold by HMS Motorsports.

An SF Bay Area company, SafeCraft also sells a net. They can even make custom units. My buddy is having one made up for his 911 race car. He contacted them by phone and they are guiding him through the process of making measurements and then installing the custom net. I'll post pictures when I get some.

I don't need to use a right side net by rule because of my seat. I may install one anyway.

I am sure there are a few other brands. Installing the things is not trivial. The mounting points have to be very secure and the angles have to be correct.

Regarding head and neck restraints, I think that perhaps NASA and SCCA are tied together. That is, neither want to be at a disadvantage regarding entrants when the requirement kicks in. That may be part of it, there are likely myriad issues. But I am sure that it won't be long now before the remaining major and minor sanctioning bodies require some type of system.

Here are a few pics of the way I did it. Open for critique of course.

I cut a slot in the dash aligned so the bottom of it was basically flush with the inside of the trunk panel then welded some flat stock as a support/guide for the webbing and a mounting point for the ratchet strap.

It enters the dash just below the black dash cover and looks clean (in my opinion).

Personally, I worry about the wrap-around seats when it comes to an emergency fire exit, especially with a Hans. (The nets release with one button, at least.)

Jack I had the same concern before I bought my containment seat (COBRA Evolution). For me it came down to the fact that I couldn't really get out my window when I had my Sparco EVO2's anyway and [hopefully] I think the risk of fire is less than risk of shunt big enough for the seat to be a benefit. I also plan to get out the passenger side in the event of any fire because the door bars are less intrusive and I mounted the pass seat as far back and out of the way as possible.

Also the containment seat adds a level of protection to my left side which a normal seat does not. That's the side I am more concerned about because of the lack of a crush zone.

Is NASA going to require a HANS or simply one that meets the 38.1 spec (or whatever its called)?

Brian, right now the rules state "A head and neck restraint meeting SFI specifications may be requires as of 1/1/08"

Is there a list of seats that Nasa has approved for the safety regs in lieu of the center net? I've hear of the Recaro, how about the Sparco Circuit? I've got Sparco's in my two track cars and I like their fit for my body.

They do not list specific seats. I think common sense will be the judge, though inevitably someone will try and push that.

As Chris said, they will not likely list specific seats. A fellow PRC racer just bought a Circuit and I am pretty sure it will be fine with NASA. He bought his from Checkpoint-Racing.

I do not think the fixed metal right side head protection approach mentioned in this thread will be fine with NASA. I think they want a proper net or proper seat.

Do you have any contact info for SafeCraft, I have an idea for a 911 specific net that would be easy to install, but not sure how feasable it would be or if it would work. I'd like to talk with them and see what we can do.

Why didn't you use the knee bar? From your photos, it looks to be only a few inches away.

That "few inches away" made all the difference. It's probably as low as it should be right now. Any lower would just be too low.

Would you mind elaborating? From the looks of things moving the front anchor down 4 inches would only move the net at your helmet/shoulder down an inch (or maybe less).
