915 4 speed, any value to the racers?

Ive got a friend with a 4 speed 915 gearbox in good shape from a 74 911. Is this a good box for racing? From what I understand, the 915 1st gears are the same and the last gears in both are the same but 2nd and 3rd are taller in the 4 speed box. Any thoughts here? Value assesment please??

4 speed 915? are you referring to a 930? All 915's were 5 speed (unless there is some odball one out there I've never heard of)

Thats exactly what I thought but one actually exists, its a fact. Just wondering where and how to use it or not use it. Would it be better on the track?

More speeds=more choices and better use of the powerband.

I wouldn't use a 4 speed in track car, but the ratios in a 4 speed can sometimes be useful in re-gearing a 5 speed.

The '74 4 speed 915 has a 7:31 ring and pinion with mechanic speedo drive - at least the last one I worked on did.
Just to be sure, I looked this up the '74 915's in the Spec book
915/16 4sp 7:31 R&P Gears: 11:35 20:32:25:26 29:21
915/06 5sp 7:31 R&P Gears: 11:35 18:33 23:29 27:25 29:21
