tach signal for data logger

Installing a data logger and need to source good tach signal ( Racepak). Can I just pigtail off the back of the tach itself? Car is 3.2 motronic mid 80's variety. The signal requirement is 50% duty cycle, 5-18 volt square wave signal ( whatever that means)
Hoping a more technically savy pelicanite could point me in the right direction.
thanks
Willy

Willy, you can tee off the existing tach line. I hate scotchlocks but they work.

The simplest install? Look into the MSD inductive pickup. Simple install and no cutting.

you need this:

MSD Ignition 8913 MSD Tach Driver

racepak uses a square sign wave. Easy install.

Tach signal

Jim
Are you saying the tach signal off the tach itself won't support the racepak requirements? On traqmate it's sufficient and I see in the manual it's pretty specific.

I can't speak to traqmate. I run a G2X w/ a UDXL dash in 1 car, IQ3 in the other.
G2 is a carb car and IQ3 is Motec. I've had to use the tachdriver on both cars. It massages the tach signal to something the Racepak stuff can read. Go to the Racepak site and pose the question to Tim. He's super good and usually gets back to you same day. HTH. BTW...I should be at Laguna Seca (don't know which car I'll bring)...look me up in the pits and I can give you some pointers. Best, J

Racepak

Thanks Jim
Sounds like the tach driver is the answer as Racepak is pretty specific on the signal it needs. Appreciate your help. I will meet up at laguna, at the very least i can buy you a Beer!!
regards
Willy

Beer is like golf balls or potatoe chips, you can't do just one!
