1995 Carrera RS 1:1 Replica
Based on a Carrera 4 Chassis VIN WP0AA299XSS323655 The car I purchased had 127K miles (it’s got 131K now) with a relatively recent engine rebuild at 96K by Exotech, a shop with very strong reputation in the North East. I wanted a 1995 Carrera 4 as a base platform. 95 because it is still OBD1. And C4 because of the hydraulic brake system, 4-channel ABS, ABD, and LSD. Those are the same as the RS and retrofitting them in a C2 chassis would’ve been difficult. Removing the AWD components out of a C4 on the other hand is a piece of cake in comparison. I’ve owned several 964s and 993s over the past decade and a half and have learned a great deal about them. I’ve always wanted to own an RS version but one I would be comfortable driving, not just pampering, so I decided to build my own. I collected parts for several years prior to starting the project. I tried to use OEM parts everywhere except where they were unavailable and better alternatives were present (mainly suspension & transmission). I have compiled a catalog with technical information and over 1300 images of 50+ (not kidding) 993 RS cars that I have studied intently and consulted with famous 964/993 restoration shops before and during the build process to make sure I don’t leave a single detail out. After purchasing the car I had the following bodywork done: Sunroof delete Sunroof drain channels delete Headlight washers delete Rear wiper delete New ROW front bumper cover New ROW rear bumper cover New heat shields RS ClubSport front and rear spoiler. The front came from Fabian Roock and was used on a real 993 GT2 race car so it has actual competition pedigree ![]() RS side skirts New front windshield New RS rear windshield (3mm thick glass, no defrost!) New rubber seals ROW amber turn signals ROW amber tail lights ROW turn signal repeaters ROW outside mirror glass (No “OBJECTS IN MIRROR…” bull****) RS windshield washer reservoir Roof mounted third brake light delete, additional brake lights installed in rear fog lights enclosures. LED brake and turn signal indicator bulbs New wipers We repaired rust in the common windshield areas, as well as in the rear rebar mount area and the car was properly sealed prior to paint. 2-stage Guards Red + clear coat. It turned out spectacular. XPEL Ultimate full front end (was the show car in the XPEL booth at Werks Reunion and Laguna Seca for the Historics in 2019) Paint correction and 4 stage Ceramic Pro 9H including wheels 2 years ago. Mechanicals: Engine: 3.6 motor rebuilt 35K miles ago. It pulls very hard, I saw no need to add a cup of espresso's worth of displacement at this stage to make it a 3.8 when it’s in such good shape. When I initially drove it, even with the plastic ’95 intake the engine felt stronger than the one in my Varioram 993 I had just sold. But I sourced out a Varioram manifold and had that installed along with a custom chip from Steve Wong in order to increase the mid-range torque. SAI delete Cruise control delete Heater fan delete New engine fan + RS single belt pulley New spark plugs New ignition wires New valve and chain cover gaskets New crank seal New oil cooler Dansk 100 cell cats (NLA), stock cats come w. car OEM mufflers with LPMM treatment New battery New A/C condenser (A/C blows cold!) Transmission: AWD delete Short ratio gears. The gearing is practically identical to my 997-2 GT3RS and was done by Bill Rader. G50/21 1st & 2nd gears, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th gears are from a 997 GT3. It’s a slightly closer ratio than the 993 RS G50/30 transmission, which is still bit too tall for the HP these cars produce. Rebuilt LSD with Guard plates. RS transmission mount RS short shifter and rod New OEM clutch & RS LWFW New rear axles Brakes: Hydraulic brake system, same as RS 4-channel independent ABS + ABD, same as RS RS front and rear calipers & rotors OEM Pagid brake pads Stainless steel brake lines Interior: Airbags delete Radio delete Rear seats delete Obsolete and unnecessary wiring delete RS Power mirrors delete (new non-power mirror door trim) RS Interior light adjustment delete RS Intermittent wiper delete (I kept it and it’s hidden under the dash) OEM non-airbag center console + RS foot lighting OEM non-airbag lower dash & ashtray OEM non-airbag fixed glove box door RS carpet RS fine grain leather smooth headliner RS seats (Speedster), mounts, and hardware (NLA, ridiculously expensive) RS steering wheel RS steering wheel column cover RS shift knob RS center storage compartment RS fine grain leather door cards & hardware RS seat belt reel enclosures Red seat belts RS frunk carpet RS battery cut off switch plate Suspension: RS front uprights RS tie rods (w. Elephant Racing spherical bushings) RS tie rod ends RS front strut bar RS suspension bushings, front & rear (Elephant Racing Sport) Custom rear drop links Rennline solid side mounts (subframe and tilt kit) RS adjustable sway bars Rothsport steering rack bushings KW V3 suspension RS front camber plates (custom shoulder nuts) and rear shock mounts. Wheels: Real deal Speedline for Porsche OEM 993 Carrera RS wheels Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires Dry weight: 2,740 lbs It’s an exhaustive list and I am probably forgetting a few things. It would cost north of $180,000 to replicate this build if the NLA parts can even be sourced out. Meanwhile a real RS in so-so condition starts at $300,000. This car was built with extreme attention to detail. The last time something remotely similar was listed for sale was in 2008. Don’t miss your chance. Asking price: $135,000. Location: San Diego, CA.
