Cayenne 04S never starts first try
My 04 Cayenne S never starts on the first try, always starts on the second. On the first turn of the key it will do nothing, like the battery is dead, but it will always start on the second try, like clockwork. This has been going on for quite awhile, I have changed the battery but that didn't help. Starter?

I would start off with 2 bottles of fuel injection cleaner in the tank..I use cem tool b-12, make sure you are name brand gas and 91 octane.
and make sure your up to date on tune-up, plugs..

unless your saying it does not turn over on first try?..there are some electronic safety switches that could be dirty or going bad like the brake pedal switch..

might be starter..loose wires somewhere.

Hopefully you are not loosing coolant... the starter is located at the back of the V in the engine and is prone to going bad due to leaking coolant hoses under the intake manifold. If you do the starter prepare yourself to go ahead and buy all the new coolant hoses (if not already updated to metal ones). Even then there are still 1 or 2 rubber ones that can go bad even if the update is done.

starts second try
I think it's my starter, starts to crank and stops like weak battery, but second try always starts, full on, instrument panel is on lights work, no clicking like weak, just needs second turn. 99% sure not battery. However I need to check things like RELAYS, starting switch... I can't seem to find where the RELAYS are located.... anyone have a diagram for 06 cayenne S starter relay locations? Also Yes I know how to test then.

Have you tried using the other key? My 2013GTS is particular to which key I use. One always works but the other is hit and miss. I’ve had to use the key to lock and unlock the car before trying to start it. Much easier to eliminate the key as a suspect than any other diagnostics.

I just posted same issue/identical for my 06 Cayenne S, I going to change out my starter. My ignition switch was just replaced but no change, battery is new. Sometimes my brake pedal is very hard on no-start, I have to remove my key and try again...always starts and starter cranks fast. Does anyone know if the brake switches on these cars could be the problem? In truth, when my car cranks over the starter moves fast and car starts immediately. I think there is an electrical short somewhere, not sure where to start looking yet.

No solution here, just more speculation. My 2008 Cayenne S seems to be heading this way. Much more pronounced in the now, colder weather. Foot on brake, turn the key and it attempts to start but gives up short of doing its job. Always starts on second try. I really don't know how this starter process works. Specifically, the car takes over the starting process once you turn the key. You don't have to keep the key turned while the starter is doing its work. Unlike earlier Porsches, or all earlier edition dinosaur cars where you have to keep the key turned to the start position in order for the starter solenoid to do its task. I suspect that this is a software issue and has nothing to do with the starter. If the starter always works the second time then you probably have a good starter. Could it be that the software , or whatever drives the starting process, just isn't keeping it in the start position long enough? This could be that certain parameters have been exceeded and the software gives it up. I have tried doing it the way of the ancients and keep the key turned on the first attempt. It works. Personally I consider this to be normal. I have never had a car start in cold weather with one turn of the key and yes, I have often had to turn the key to the start position several times even in mild weather.
