Harmonic Balancer separated - How to tackle?
My 2004 257k miles Cayenne S threw a belt and left me stranded.
Turns out that the Harmonic balancer separated from itself and almost caused major damage. The dip stick tube may have saved me, but I'll need to replace it as a hole has been worn through it. Now how to tackle the fix? Has anyone done this repair before? My first guess is to take out the dipstick, remove the harmonic balancer bolt (don't reuse) with air wrench if there is room, pull the balancer (not sure with what tools) and reverse the process with new balancer and bolt. |

I'm looking for this tool, but can't find it anywhere.
96790 arm bracked Manual indicated I can hold the harmonic balancer with it. This should save me from taking the entire front end off the Cayenne. |

I was able to find a low profile socket and a low profile air wrench to take off the bolt. I placed a double layer of cardboard in front of the radiator and pulled the trigger on the air wrench till I noticed it started to move. Then I followed up with short bursts until the bolt was free to turn by hand. Balancer just pulled off after the nut was gone.
Just need parts to come in the mail for reassembly. ![]() |
