Hello, I have a 2006 Cayenne S with 142k miles on it. I have been having a problem with the transmission. When I start out in the morning it sits in 1st gear for a while (to heat up the CATs is what I have read) then I come to the stoplight leaving my neighborhood or even the stop light after and I will occasionally feel a subtle shift in the car and when I look at my dash it will say D5 while I'm stopped when it previously said D2 or D1. I will then try to manually through the Tiptronic system downshift it but that does not work when this happens. If I throw it into park and back to drive it usually sorts itself out. Recently it got worse, I had to shift it back and forth from P to D numerous times and when it said D2 in the dash it acted as if it had not grabbed second gear fully because when I would try to accelerate it would not move forward and if I kept trying it would eventually clunk and go. Well the last time it did it the check engine light came on and it the gear indicator went away and it jst said D with a solid box around it in the gauge cluster. when I scanned the code at the Porsche dealer all that it pulled up was a Tiptronic error and a transmission fault on their full blow computer scanner. I had them check the tranny fluid level as I know there is a slow leak that requires the transmission to be dropped to fix so I am avoiding it. Dealer told me that the fluid level was correct. The tech cleared the code and drove it 2 miles with no issue and no check engine light coming back. It appears to happen primarily on colder mornings and after the truck and tranny have warmed up it does not appear to do it anymore.
Anyone else experienced anything like this? I have heard the valve bodies are an issue and am confident in my ability to fix that but would like to be more confident before i spend 700 dollars on that plus another 200 on a filter and fluid. I have also heard that a control module in the center console that is related to the shifter could be the issue. |

Approximately 4yrs ago when I just purchased my 2006 Cayenne S, it would stall and not go into 2 or 3 gear when it was cold or temp was below 40'F. Also it would rev high before shifting into the next gear. I then made a decision to add Amsoil Engine and Transmission flush to the transmission. the flush was added into the existing ATF fluid prior to a full draining and filter change. Suspected the ATF fluid may have lost its hydraulic and lubricating properties it had a light color and watery viscosity.
Once I Replaced the fluid with AMSOIL ATF Fluid and did my filter change the problems immediately disappeared. Wow! the driveability changed completely, no more high rev-stalling and firm shift points. No shuddering at all, Wow! ![]() I also changed all the fluids throughout my cayenne to AMSOIL Exclusive Synthetics. My SUV "Woke up" Maybe you should Follow the same path... ![]()

PS, My Cayenne S TI Had approximately 182k Miles and the Power train fluids look like they had never been serviced. before I took ownership or though out its life prior to me...
Its Worth a shot... Later.

My understanding is that slightly too much or too little fluid will cause serious problems....that getting it right will fix. I have not filled mine myself, but when I looked up how you do it...it was not what one would expect (from experience with other cars).

I'm experiencing very similar issues with my 06 CTT. When the vehicle warms up (after a few miles of driving) it works fine. It has gotten worse with the colder weather. I recently purchased the vehicle and the pervious owner had the transmission serviced by a shop in the past year.
Let us know if you get it sorted-out. I'm also getting a strong gear-oil smell through the HVAC system - but no leaks that I can find. I'm going to take it to my local Porsche guru to get his ideas. Chip |
