Tow hitch / controller wiring

Hi All,

Just getting to know my new-to-me 2008 Cayenne base. Previous owner installed a tow hitch and manual says "your Porsche is equipped with a 7-pin connector....." which doesn't appear to be the case.

What wiring, if any, is already in place for connecting a 7-pin plug and brake controller?

Any other advice on what to do and how to do it would be appreciated.

Thanks folks.

You have to look carefully. The stock plug is very well hidden.

If it's there, adding an electric brake controller is plug & play.

Hey thanks! I'll get under there and have another look.

No 7-pin

Took another closer look and nothing evident. I didn't want to splice into existing wiring but might not have a choice.

I have owned 04, 08 & 14 Cayenne's. In my opinion, Porsche is pretty messed up when it comes to your issue. The manuals say that a 7 pin connector is included, but in fact it is a 7 pin plug that is tucked behind a cover plate located just left of the center of the hitch. You have to add the actual receptacle. Search Pelican for Part # PNA-955-118-93-B-OEM. This information is for the factory trailer hitch only!

If the previous owner installed an aftermarket hitch, the wires are in the vehicle, but you will need a towing computer, hitch harness, 7 pin receptacle and possibly have the dealer program the car. The towing computer works to adjust shifting, interconnect alarm for trailers, connect trailer lights and brakes and maybe some other benefits. You can add a brake control by locating the 4 pin harness under the steering colume. The other option may be to tap into light wires, like the good old days. However, I am not sure of what issues you may encounter.

Here is my write up how I installed an aftermarket tow hitch with the Factory Tow Module. It may be helpful.
