Engine cranking

Hello,i have an issue with my 2009 cayenne s .takes about 5 to 6 turns of the ignition switch to start
When I turn the key it cranks for about a second and I have to keep going back and forth with the key and each time it cranks for a second until it finally starts.battery is new and tried a new relay.I do not mind replacing starter but never seen one do this
At the relay I put a test light at the feed wire to starter and the light reacts same as starter,blinks for a second and then full bright when cranking.no codes in kessy.do not know how system works and have not been able to locate function chain anywhere,could it be possible the it is still a starter motor maybe creating too much draw and system cuts out.looking for ideas,thanks

My 04, on a quick turn and release of the key, will crank for seconds (5?) until the engine starts.

I suppose that the start cranking time could be related to the current drawn and a bad starter could do this, but IDK.

A simple way to remember the difference is this: if you turn the key and nothing happens, the engine won't turn over. But, if you turn the key and you hear that cranking noise and the engine won't fire, then it's not starting.

I do not get it,of course if the engine cranks and does not fire it is not starting.???

Sounds like a starter or ignition switch problem. I ended up changing my starter and no problems.

on mine if foot is on brake i turn key and immediately release it - the engine continues to crank with key released until engine starts - tonod are you saying yours won't continue cranking and only turns one revolution and then you have to cycle the key to get another one revolution? - how about if you turn and hold the key in start position...any difference? - problem with whatever controls that start function??

It does no go even a full revolution of engine,if foot is on brake and I turn key and let go it will crank the engine for maybe half a revolution and then stop ,if I hold the key in the crank position it will act the same,half a revolution I have to do this various times until it starts cranking properly and starts.I replaced the starter with a factory rebuilt Bosch thinking maybe old starter and too much draw but no go still the same.I am thinking it is not an ignition switch because when I turn the key all the way to crank and release it cranks for half a revolution,I figure at that point the switch has done its job.I figure the fault lies in who ever is in charge of cranking I believe kessy module.but no codes in module,how do I isolate to the problem.I know a used module is not plug and play but will the engine crank and not start or will there be a no crank,that would be one way of checking.does anyone know?I hate throwing parts at a car and I am hoping someone may know how to properly trouble shoot.

i'm not sure which module controls the timing of the engine cranking but it sounds like that's your problem

It sounds exactly li8ke the issue I had recently. 2008 Cayenne S. My issue was with the starter, however, the starter was bad due to another issue. It turns out that the cooling pipes on top of the engine have plastic connectors. The connectors, after going through a lot of heat cycles were very brittle and coolant was leaking out. The coolant then ran down to the starter and the starter went bad. The peripheral issue then becomes: How much repair money are you willing to throw at a 14 year old car. I decided to fix it and other things because I like it and I don't like making car payments. Economically it really doesn't make much sense.

As I stated earlier new factory rebuilt Bosch starter,no coolant leaks.does not have the plastic pipes ,the starter home is very dry.
