2008 Cayenne Gearshift Snafu

Sitting in my driveway I decided to pull up on my gearshift while depressing the unlock button on the knob. Einstein I am not. I was seeing if it was an easy in/easy out to replace the leather cover on the knob which has all but separated from the knob. The gearshift lifted up ~3" and I pushed it back down into place. Now it will shift freely between Neutral and Drive (and it does operate in this mode). It will not shift into Park or Reverse. I have seen the process photos for accessing the whole gearshift assembly. Where do I start? What happened as a result of me lifting the shifter up about 3" and then pushing it back down? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have begun accessing the assembly per the process photos but have stopped pending a knowledge transfer of wtf I am doing. Graci. John in Seattle

Got it figured out. Its the gearshift knob itself. It's not engaging the "eye of the needle" plastic piece that juts out through the aluminum sleeve that fits over the shaft. I can shift the car by pulling up the plastic 'needle" and moving the shaft to whatever gear is needed. Getting it into park and reverse was just as the instructions stated: move the rocker arm, pull up on the plastic needle and shift with the shaft. Now I need to shop for a knob assembly,... Hmmmm where could I possibly get one of those? Peace out.

did you break off the "hook" in the knob?...the eye on the release "needle"? - i think to release the knob from the shaft you need to pull out the release button..not press it in - this unhooks it from the plastic eye inside the aluminum sleeve - before you pull out the release button you also must first twist the chrome trim right under the knob about 90 degrees - not sure which way to twist it, but it will twist - i think this is the method for your year - post a pic of what you got

i checked mine....looking down on the knob that chrome piece and the entire shaft turn counterclockwise about 90 degrees to unlock the shaft
