05 Cayenne S
Hello,
This is my first post. I am having an issue with the charging system. Engine will charge fine when first started. Alternator puts out between 13.8-14.2 VDC. Battery is strong. When the engine is shut off and then restarted while hot the alternator puts out 0 VDC and the battery/alternator dash light comes on. When the engine is shut off and allowed to cool down, the alternator operates fine and will run for hours at the normal output. Coolant level is normal and i have verified circulation through the alternator. Engine running at 180 degrees F. Battery cables have low resistance and grounds are good. Is there a high temperature limit switch embedded in the voltage regulator or alternator that anyone knows of? I do not want to change out the alternator if that is not the root cause. Maybe a computer software issue? If it has happened to me it has happened to many others... Any input would be appreciated. Thanks. |

That is a fairly common sign of a voltage regulator/alternator failure. But before tackling that job I would recommend checking to see if your Cayenne is fitted with the auxiliary rear battery. I have found a few of these neglected batteries causing all sorts of issues, never the one you speak of but, new stuff is discovered daily by us!! So double check that first... It will be under the spare tire beneath the plastic cover... Let me know what you find!

Hi Casey,
Can you please post a picture of the rear auxiliary battery, what years had them? Was this optional? Thanks, Determined

![]() Sure! This is out of a 2004 Cayenne S with the BOSE woofer in the rear, remove the BOSE woofer and you should see this. I am not sure if ONLY BOSE equipped cars had them but that could be a possibility also. It was an option after (I believe) M.Y. 2004. |

Hi, I have the Turbo S and just replaced my under seat battery, then while flicking through the hand book found that there was another battery in the trunk. I will replace this battery as well because it is 2006! But does anyone know the functionality of the two batteries. I mean which one is used for starting and is there any user interaction required to switch from the main to auxiliary battery, and which battery is the main and which the auxiliary?
Thank you for any advice. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk |

This is from memory, but I remember learning that the main battery is the under the seat battery. The rear battery is the auxiliary battery. They are both charged by the alternator and I think the rear battery is primarily used to start the vehicle.
I salute you for reading the owners manual!!! They paid somebody a LOT of money to write that! Loads of good information in there ![]() |
