Not mine, but damn cool:
https://www.diyelectriccar.com/forums/showthread.php/911-rsr-tesla-motor-192602.html It's a '79 SC with a Model S motor in the back and two 1st gen Chevy Volt packs. The good photos are here: https://www.diyelectriccar.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1030081&postcount=186 |

Perhaps a foto or two posted here would be nice. The site the links are to has two many annoying popups and video adds and no pictures of the car unless I subscribe to the site!

How much would it cost to get the same amount of reliable torque to the wheels from...literally any air-cooled motor...and how often is that done?

Do they admit curb weight? Guessing close to a thousand pounds more than an ICE version...
Where do I not sign up?

His dad has a wonderful 914-6 GT clone. The car was a roller that was gutted so not much original. I wouldn't have done it but people think I am crazy for my projects so who am I to judge.

Is this the car in question? Took these pics at Sema and was underwhelmed by the overall execution...
74 it is not.... Hence my question if this is the same car. This look reminds me of the way classic bugs got the "cal look" back in the 80's...

Ironic, but the way our laws are written I think this would fail smog in California (underhood inspection, removal of factory smog devices)

As a hybrid, this was already done in 1970 by my college.
See page 2 of this pdf https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/47190002.pdf

Ah, the valuable naysayers...I take it y'all just don't like electric cars in general? Different strokes for different folks. I like a clutch pedal and roaring flat-six as much as the next car nerd, but electric cars are sweet, and classic hot rod conversions are starting to kick ass.
The car above isn't the same one. I'm not a fan of the '74 RSR look, and there is more modification in the chassis than I'd ever want to put in, but the build is well done. With two sets of Volt packs, it will certainly be heavy, but part of the builder's goal was to keep battery costs down until the project was proven, at which point Tesla batteries will have come down in cost (they have greater power/weight than Volt batteries). A lot of the weight is determined by desired range, really. With 100mi range, it could very well be lighter, better balanced, with (way) more power than stock. As it sits, I believe it's a few hundred over stock with similar weight balance front/rear. Laughter-inducing torque: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQbKBapxK4U&t=50s |

100 mile range is a giant leap backwards in technology.
Electric is cool, just not in old vintage cars IMO. Should be getting the new Taycan in soon and will report my driving impressions...

Let’s get some math going.
Two Volt battery packs: 870lbs One Tesla drive unit: 295lbs Assorted wiring and I’m guessing cooling fluids: 100lbs So some 1,270 lbs vs. 400lb weight of say a hot 2.8 RSR along with 110 mag case trans makes for a 720lb heavier 911.

It is almost comical to me that some of the responders seem personally offended by the project. lol
It is not for me but I can appreciate the work and effort by the builder to do something they wanted to do. To each his own. I love seeing different peoples ingenuity. |
