hi im doing the same thing but with a 1641 and im in england! so far everything fits ok. The starter also looks ok but it may need minor shimming. even the cluch seems happy. My only recomondation is that you get hold of a larger engine. The 1200cc is weedy even in a bug, 1600'c are cheap available and very easy to modify. Mine was only £600 but a standard second hand 1600 is about £250-£350. Also they can end up looking similar to the original engie. Good luck.

I only want to put in a 1200cc engine as it is the closes to the org engine with very little moding .If I am to spend real money on the car then I have a spare 912 engine with 1720 cc pistons and barels that i can fit in the car at a later date

cheers

mark

where in the UK are you ??

No I was not at ACE cafe but I intend to come up one day. I know who you are now. No I will be putting in the 912 spare engine in the 356 once I get time. But for now the 1200cc is going in . Why because it is the closes to the org unit (Pre-A 1954) Fly wheel startermotor etc......
