Question 914 / Super Beetle Conversion

First of all, great site. Stumbled upon during search, what a find!

I currently own a '71 Super Beetle with 98k miles. Suspension has been reworked and it handles like a dream. However, the power plant is on it's last legs. I've considered a VW rebuilt to the 1915cc range. But I know that the 914 plant fits nicely and understand the blocks are far better and lend themselve better for mods.

I have my eyes on a '71 914 thats been sitting for a while and I don't know it's life history (price is RIGHT!).

I'm mechanically enclined but need to know if this is a viable option. Does the tranny and motor work together in the Super or do I need to go with a 901(?) tranny? Can I utilize the disk brake system on the Super, and if so who offers a kit?

I need a winter project, is this it?

Thanks Eric
