vw bus engine conversion

Can anyone help me out by telling me the simplest porsche conversion I can perform on my 1976 VW bus. I was thinking that the 914 would bolt in the easyist, would the 1.7 or the 2l be a better engine? Also what can I expect to pay for the parts, I'll be doing most of the work myself. Thank you

Well, a 76 VW bus already has a type 4 in it. So swapping to a 914's 1.7 or 1.8 is not going to get you much. A well built 2.0 is a good start. Or you can build a 1.8 to 2.0 specs and have the heads worked on. Jake Raby does alot of type 4's for vans and has some good formulas specifically for powering the van.
