porsche trans into a vw 1973 westy?
Has anyone ( or know of anyone) who has put a Porsche 5 speed into a bus? I have a type 4 engine in mine and am looking at replacing the transmission to either a latemodel (75 - 79) 6 rib trans, or had a recommendation to fit a Porsche 5-speed into the bus. Looking at something that will be reliable, good on the highway (westy used for events in club that can and will involve long distances), and can have a little speed (yes, i know it is a bus and speed is not something that they are known for).
Any help would be great. |

We installed a 915 trans in my '68 crewcab, along with a 3.2. The trans mounts were welded to the stock torsion tubes. We used stock '75 911 axles which bolted directly up. Don't know how similar the Westy is to the older buses.

When you stuck the 3.2 into the crew cab what problems did yourun into with cooling and oil tanks etc.
I want to do the same except with a 3.6 into a single cab. Michael |

So far cooling hasn't been an issue. I'm not using an external cooler. I have a Mocal cooler I will use if need be. We cut the right rear inner fender out of a 911 and grafted it in to mount the oil tank. The 3.2 has an engine mounted cooler the 3.6 doesn't, so you will need to mount an external cooler of some type.
