Type 34 Karman Ghia with 2.4 MFI Motor
Hi all, new member to this forum. I have a Type 34 Karmann Ghia that has been fitted with a 72 911 2.4T MFI motor. As a new owner of Porsche power I have found this web site unbeleivably helpful in understanding what makes these motors tick.

I will take some detail shots of the install if you want. Has extra bracing across the body between the shock towers and down the sides to support the rear engine mounts. Rear suspension has been changed to IRS. 10ltr oil tank is located in the front luggage compartment and oil lines do a full circuit around the car.
Body mods include, cut out for oil tank, clearancing of the rear of the engine bay and removal of a large piece of the rear valance to accomadate the large muffler. |

Here are a couple more pics that I have on file. Will take some more over the weekend.
First one is Oil Tank location. Its fron mounted to balance out the weight a bit. As is the battery. Oil circulates thru 3/4 copper tubing down one sill (right side) to the motor and back up the left sill. Updated shot of the 2.4T MFI motor. Have fitted nice new stainless plug wires, Crane Hi6 ignition unit and generally cleaned it up. Future plans are o/hauling the throttle bodies and distrubutor. That looks amazing. Is it possible for you to get detailed pics of what sheet metal you needed to trim from the engine bay? Do you have a stock 911 muffler or a custom one? I am about to embark on a 2L 6cyl, 901 5spd swap into my 65 notchback. I can't wait. Any tips or advice? Here's the project car

Here is a couple of detail pics Matt. Basically you would need to remove all the inner panels from the rear of the car. Mine runs a 911 muffler so the rear valance has been cut below the bumper to accomadate this.
There is a cross brace fitted at the top of the engine bay and this supports the motor with a rubber mounted aluminium mounting. See pic. At the rear of the motor there is a long cross mount (similar to the porsche mounting) that is mounted very low. See pic also. At the front a hole has been cut in the RHS to house the 10ltr alloy oil tank. Oil is moved from front to rear thru 3/4 copper tubing running along the inner sills on both sides. If I was starting from scratch I would go for 1" Stainless all round. A remote oil filter is mounted horizontally beside the transmission on the return oil line. On the suction side the lines are all kept well below the center line of the motor to ensure that the main oil pump is always flooded with oil. Trans is a single side plate VW. Bolts right up with the right combination of clutch and pressure plate. If you are running MFI (like mine) you will need to run an extra fuel line. I use the original line as a return and fitted a larger 7mm supply line. Fitted this inline brass screen to filter out any large particulate bits that may find there way in to the oil tank. Probably overkill but it gives me some piece if mind.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1125994204.jpg

Thank you so much. I will be running the weber 40 IDA's, but I am going to install a larger diameter fuel line running through the tunnel. I was also thinking of installing the factory oil tank in the right rear qtr panel area, kinda like this

This week I am about to emark on this journey. I have a Brazilian Puma which has Type 1 underpinnings. I have swing axles and I am converting to IRS py using the weld on clips with 86 944 Turbo trailing arms, axles, spring plates, brakes and parking brake etc. I have a 901 5 spd, with the parts I mentioned it is pretty much a bolt in for the trans. I am using 912 shifter, rod and coupler. A notch on the bottom of the pan is required for the shift rod as the trans sits lower. I am grafting the 912 shift tunnel. Transmission mount have to be fabricated, however that is the simplest of the jobs to do.
As for the 911 2.4 I am doing a similar frame brace between top of the frame and then down the sides and then connect them. This will support the rear of the engine. I will supply the pictures as I go. I also have the custom front hubs for the 944 t brakes in the front Gary |

Hi, we've been discussing your conversion earlier by E-mail. I just wanted to make sure you're running with stock IRS T-1/3 gearbox, right? Do you have the stock rearframe too without the rear gearbox support horns? I would like to know wether it is enough with the original front mount of the gearbox and a custom made rearmount to the engine. Thanks. |
