Quiz time; how similar is the 2 liter Audi engine block in the 924 to the 2 liter 16v block in a GTI? My thought is that a 924 would a blast to drive with a warmed-over GTI 2.0 16v motor in it. I suspect that they are fairly similar but have never taken a close look at a 924. I've got a 944 and my wife has a 924S and like the motors in them. If I find a 924 with no sunroof I may consider buying it to build into a rally car with a 16v motor for the SCCA ProRally series. The car would fall into Group 2 which is an open class for small displacement, non-turbo, 2WD cars. Since there is an Audi engine in this model Porsche, I may be able to get away with putting a VW 16v in it. Then I'd gut the car, try to get the weight down to 2300 lbs, put all the safety stuff in, put in Bilsteins, and get 200hp out of that 16v mill. It's a good thing dreams are free!

Hello
The Porsche 924 and the modern VW/Audi 2,0 16 V didn´t share the same engine block. The 924 engine is from the Audi 100 line and was used previuos in the 100 S Coupe. Thsi engine was exclusivly mountet in the Audi 100´s up to 1989 ( As 2,0 115 HP ), the VW LT ( As 2,0 75 or 85 HP ) up to 1995. Also the 5 Zylinder used that engine as base design. Fiting an Audi 80 136 HP 2,0 16 V would better as the exhaust and the manifold have the right direction. However the fitment wouldn´t be a direct bolt in. With the usage from VW parts the engine can be upgraded to the 150 HP versions. Some Tuners like Hartmann or Oettinger have kits for 190 HP. Well thats what the euro 931 offerd but had more wight. Audi Sport had once adoptet Cosworth 4 Valve heads for that Audi 100 engine and i think Treser sold them. Intentet for Rallying in 2,0 Class. Just a old rumor never seen one. Grüsse |

I was told by a "Porsche person" that the 924/944 motor and Audi 5 cylinder had the same bellhousing bolt pattern. I was also told by a "Volkswagen person" that a Audi 5 cylinder and VW GTI 4 cylinder were the same bolt pattern. I am not sure if this is true but if both statements are true then they are all the same bolt pattern.

Hello
Yes nearly all the watercooled inline VW engines can be interchanged. However there are differnt bolt patterns depending on year and usage. Sometimes you have to drill new holes or find nothing to drill as the early engine partial miss the boses there. So in fact you can fit from the 34 HP/1,0 up to the 350 HP/4,2L every engine on the 924 Bellhouse. Maybe you need some adjusting. Not sure about the new 400 HP /W12 To check the bolt pattern just use the 924 Bellhousing removed from the torsion tube. You can even check the flywheel/TOB demands. Grüsse |

I was looking around for different swaps to do with my 1991 VW gti and saw this thread for swaping porsche and VW engines. What are the chances that the 225hp 2.5l engine from the 924 would fit in the GTI. Just wondering if any one would know or have any insite on it working.
