81 Vanagon DOKA needing Motivation

:)

I have seen a few 911 powered Vanagons over the years, but never paid much attention to the details of how the motor & trannys were hung in place.

I now have one needing motivation by means of a 911 engine..............

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1276276818.jpg

Anyone know what is done for mounts? Is a subframe necessary? I see some pretty elaborate crossbars like the Aluminum version Fabcar made up.

I was thinking of welding triangular plates in the corners as done with the early 66-89 911s.

Anyone have ideas on how to proceed? Please no PM's as my box is always full.

Email is best so photos can be sent.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Len,

What engine/trans combo are you plan to fit ?
MSDS use to sell a real bolt-on kit to fit a 3.2 with a vw or g50 trans some years ago...
I have one 930 3.4 RUF along with a g50-52 collecting dust for one year as I have no time to fit them in my 86 panel...It will be a real blast when it was completed !
I also will put 930 brakes and 16" fuchs all around...

Good luck and keep us posted

:)

Plan to use a 3.2 as I have a fresh one with PMOs.

Trans is open, I have a good 915 and a good G50/01.

I think the Vanagon has a hydraulic clutch, so would be easier to use the G50 trans.

Anyone have any pointers?

Had a little time while the M96 motor was out of the 911SC (another project), so we lifted it into the DOKA to eyeball any fitment issues...........

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1285166482.jpg

Looks like there is plenty of room.

Taking measurements to make mounts. Its a water cooled (Diesel) chassis already so it should work.

Looks like everything will fit fine, just be spending some time making engine tin around it.

Well tranny mount has been made up..............

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1288558740.jpg

and now I am working on the rear engine mounts, and reinforcing the chassis as I intend to fit a trailer hitch as well.

More photos will come as progress is made.

VW van porsche powered

Hi, I have a 68 van in the process of a subaru conversion, about 75% completed. The next project is a 2.7 porsche motor install, with the vw trans. I would be interested in checking your progress. Thanks, Doughttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1290085993.jpg

Presently fabbing up the mounts F & R.
Everything is only being tacked until we can confirm placement.
Then we will weld & powdercoat them & take photos.
Will be a long winter project I expect.

Had some time to work on the engine mounts. Tied them in with the rear bumper extensions to give it strength......

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1291819440.jpg

Heres the rear bumper, intended to support a Receiver Hitch to tow my various projects around......

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1291819565.jpg

Its 3in Box tube with a 1/4in wall and HD enough for my towing needs I hope.

Anyone know of a Hydraulic Clutch slave assy made for a 915 trans?

This DOKA uses a hydraulic clutch.

Has anyone used the CB Performance 6076 Slave cylinder?

Motor is now hanging in place...............

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1292113916.jpg

Its a 01 996 3.4 motor that may or may not get Weber carbs, depending on if I have the funds & time to complete the intake manifolds.

It would simplify the install greatly.

Everything is tacked in place. Had to reposition some of the pieces, but now I am happy with the results.

Next we will weld all the mounts, prep them & have them powdercoated. Then its on to building the HD receiver hitch to tow my Featherlite trailer.

I will post the progress as it comes.

Have a great holiday everyone.

Great build thread Len and certainly unique to MA.

I've poked around at autosportengineering.com for years eying some of your cars and projects. This one is very interesting for sure.

Subscribed and will be checking back. Good luck.

Thank you.

Slow progress with all the bad weather. I hope its running by Spring, would love to drive it to Hershey.

Heres a shot of the Receiver Hitch welded to the bumper..............

More photos to come as progress is made. Working on the M96SC project at the same time and money is very tight right now.

I need a custom hitch like that for my Audi Avant. Can't seem to find a good hitch anywhere.

Separately, I'm perpetually poking around for a nice, clean, well maintained 964. Coupe or Targa ok. 5 spd a must and lower miles a plus. If you come across one, let me know.

A bit difficult to work on when buried in 15in of snow................

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1294853900.jpg

However, once inside where its warm & dry, we will get the bumper back on & ck that off the list.

We may even be able to hang the motor & trans once more to start the cooling system design.

Cheers,

Well the motor is back in place after further revisions on the front (trans) mount and the rear support between the corners for the trailer hitch............

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1295789638.jpg

Since this will be a work truck, I hope to fit air bags to assist with the tow load when hauling anything heavy.

With stock springs, there is 8in of ground clearance under the motor, and the receiver hitch is 16in from the pavement.

Got to measure for the axle length and decide how & where to run the alum coolant tubes.

I have also started making up the mount for the Hyd Clutch slave cyl.

More photos as progress is made. Shooting for the Hershey swap meet this spring.

Well, its buried again........................

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1296146195.jpg

Another 14in of snow on top. This time it sits a bit lower with the motor & trans in place.

Will be glad when it runs and we don't have to push it in, and out, and in, and out, and ........

Have a great Porsche day everyone.

Got it inside just before the latest storm, just another 12 more inches. Glad to be in where its warm & dry.

Here is a mock-up of the Hyd Clutch Slave assy.........

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1296772810.jpg

Went with one from from CNC products and uses a simple angle bracket.

Once I make sure it works properly I will make up a heavy Duty Alum piece to take its place.
