Is this a stock head and cam setup? Any plans to upgrade heads and cam?

Yan2947 10-21-2013 04:23 PM

Steve, it is completely stock. It was a brand new crate engine from GM with nothing added. I have no plans to upgrade. It is way too fast already.

315 RWHP in a 2,100 lb car = 10 second 1/4 mile car, if you can get it to hook. SmileWavy

For a few hundred more you could push close to 400 hp! I'd love to see more pics of the setup and install.

Yan2947 10-21-2013 05:02 PM

I was at 2950lbs. I would be a little slower in the 1/4 mile...

Here is a link to todays Dyno. Nothing too exciting:

Just weighed the car again. The previous weight of 2940 was with the old wing, no AC compressor and no AC condenser on the rear wing. The previous wing was metal with a rubber lip and a different radiator with dual fans.

The weight today is 2920 and I have added the compressor and rear condenser. The rear wing is a Toy-Jet wing with his radiator and setup. The newer wing is fiberglass and the lip is also fiberglass, although it looks like rubber because of the paint. After taking the car to the tuner, lowering the fan on/off temp, changing the fuel mix and timing, I can not get the car to go above 184F. Same time last year, didn't matter if it were cold outside or not. If I brought the rpm's up above 3500, the coolant would get well above 220 after a few miles of driving. We shall see what the summer brings.

So far, I have lived up to what I set out to do. Swap motors but not cut up my car. It is pretty much stock with an obvious LS1 in the rear but everything else remains. AC is working nice. Summer will tell how nice. Getting ready to deal with the heating. A guy down in Oklahoma is building me a heater box/core for the rear, under the rear seat with a Spal fan and ports into the original heater ducts. We shall see how well it works. Getting cold up here in NY.

From looking at that 0-60 video there seems to no need for upgrades. And unless your are planning on towing a trailer that massive torque makes 1st gear in a 915 obsolete!:)

Yan2947 10-29-2013 05:09 PM

It sure makes 1st gear in this G50 01 obsolete too. Wish I could spring for taller gears and wish I swapped out fifth gear when I put the new motor in. Do you have a trailer hitch? I sure wouldn't mind adding one! I could get rid of my Jetta TDI!

Being both a 911 fan, and a muscle car guy, I have thoroughly enjoyed this thread. Thanks for sharing, I love your car!

PacificP 10-31-2013 06:29 AM

Yan2947 10-31-2013 07:14 AM

I'm going to ask an honest legitimate question. I think this car is awesome, I have no issue with it. But right now I have a C5 Z06 (That I am selling for a hot rod 3.4 '75). My car is on Coilovers and has Sparco seats and actually weighs only 50 pounds more than your car with 385 to the wheels. A good one can be had for 22 which financially is a better move than an ls1 911. Going back at it would you not rather have the car that was developed and designed to have the ls1/ls6 etc? I'm wagering my Z is probably faster than this car, better around a track and cheaper. Just an honest question and hopefully this didn't come off as a poor taste comment.

Thanks...and, have a great day:)

Sauce, I would rather have the car I have. I didn't buy it originally with the thought of putting in an LS1. My motor ended up having issues that would eventually need a re-build or a new motor. I read about the swaps and moved forward with it. They are just different cars and both are great. Hopefully you can find a 911 with an LS1 that someone would be willing to sell for 22. It would never cross my mind. However, I do see lots of 944 LS1's for sale for less then that. Good luck with your sale.

to add to yans comments...i have two v8 conversions. one is a sbc conversion in a 71 and the other is a 930 with a mast motorsports drive by wire ls7. it never crossed my mind about a z06. for my purposes, i wanted a porsche hotrod with plenty of non-porsche horsepower. i dont have any problems with porsche engines but wanted v8 power and not six cylinders. the 78 930 weighs in at less than 2400 pounds and has 705 crank horsepower. it was not cheap but it was what i wanted to build. and, it was the combination of power, body style, handling that i wanted to drive on the street...

Understandable, makes sense put that way. Enjoy the car! I'd love to ride in one, I'm not looking for an LS powered car though, I love my bette and I'd just keep it if so.

Simply amazing. I'm in the process for gathering parts for my LS build at Tarmac-SPL in Farmingdale, NY. I still need a transmission and the mount kit. Any regrets during this build? I may have missed it but do you have an LSD G50? Where in NY are you? I would love to come experience this first hand.

Yan2947 01-12-2014 04:12 AM

smellslikecurry, I am in the Hudson Valley near New Paltz. Not driving the car in the winter but come spring time... I have the G50 01 but not LSD. I wish I had taller gears. That makes a big difference on cooling and noise. There is no reason not to put very tall gears in the car in my opinion unless you are racing the car - then you need to speak to an expert. I also wish that once everything was running I immediately got the car Dyno Tuned. Would have solved some issues right at the start. Get a G50 or 930 Tranny and put tall gears in it. If money is an issues at least put the tall 5th gear in it. One day I will do the same but don't want to take the motor out again. Hope that helps.
