Rennsport Doppelkabine -67 project.

Hi, I'm in the process of putting 2,0L 911T engine in a VW splitty bus.

I have some Q's about the oil tank.

1. Is there something to take into concideration regarding the location of the oiltank in proportions to the engine heightwise?
2. What size should the oil tank be?
3. What connections and oil lines do I need to make on it?

Any info is welcome, also things I have not asked.

Thanks you!!

Hi,

The 2.0 T engine is very rarely chosen for VW conversion.
I am in the middle of installing a 3.2 engine in a 1985 vw T3.
The better choice is to buy a used oil tank from a 2.4 / 2.7 (very easily come by).
You have three lines to use : oil input line, oil output line, engine case breather hose.
I do have a 1955 samba 23 window resto project and I just check with a 3.3 TBO oil tank.
If you like to cut some of the rear hand fender well it fits in almost identical position as the 911.

Good luck

Ok, thanks for the input. The reason for the 2,0l choice is the Finnish regulations. Maximum engine displacement increase etc...

I located an oiltank for 65-71 for 50€ so I guess it will even be correct for the engine.

The 65-71 is the correct oil tank for your engine and increasingly hard to found. The price is a bargain with no doubts!

Good luck!

Hi Hebster, the oil tank set up in my Karman has a custom made front mounted tank. Wouldnt work in a splitty set up. The info from Jim Hunter is exactly what I would use in your set up. Standard 911 70 thru to 77 oil is the go. Can we see some build pics ???

You asked for it Dean...

Here's how I found it..

Here at home together with my kids "KidVRod" Gokart.

Pulled the original engine and transmission before I started IRS converting.
Used 944 trailingarms etc.

http://www.fvwa.sitefactory.fi/data/3272.JPG

Testfitted rearbrakes:

Disassembled the frontspindles so I could flip them for a 3½ inch drop.

Testfitted the engine (well engineblock and fanhousing) so see what would need to be modified to make it fit behind the enginelid without cutting a hole in it...

I decided to move the whole engine and transmission package forward about one inch so the fan would clear the enginelid by an inch and a half..
Oh, yes. The transmission is from a 1303S superbeetle.
Thought long and hard on how I would make the front transmission mount when I had to move it forward. I ended up cutting off the original front mount and bought a 901 frontmount that I modified like this:

Last week I started cutting up the enginebay and prepare some pieces to box the rear frame so it would be strong enough for the rear enginemounts for the boxer six.

Yesterday I finally got the front 944 hubs mounted so I could test the front wheels too with the dropped spindles.
This is now how far I'm at the moment.

Nice one Kristian. The Double Cab is the ultimate Splitty in my opinion and having a nice 2ltr flat 6 in the rear will make it even cooler. Nice work. Looks in real good shape too. Gates look to be rust free. Are you going to use a middle mount also??

Thanks. The gates do need some work as the bottom squareboxing on them is pretty badly pitted and even worse repaired years ago... They are also slightly bent as this have been a hard working vehicle...

Not sure if I can use the stock midmount as the headers will probably hit the transmission mounts..

This is a shot of my '68 crewcab w/3.2 & 5 sp. We cut the right inner fender of a 911 and grafted it in for the oil tank. I also cut the back arced section out of a 911. That way I could use the stock engine seals all the way around.

Thanks but I will fab my own mounts for the oiltank. Just as easy.

Also the rear engine mount and seals will have to be custom made as the Splitty Crewcab enginebay is 8 cm shorter than the Baywindow enginebay...

What hardware is used in the stock supportframe to rubber mounts?

Here's the new custom made engine supportframe in the making:

Way too long since I was able to work on the Crewie now.. Still 2 more weeks before I get more freetime again and can focus on it more...

Recieved the custom made beetle flywheel today though!! 8) Final weight appr. 6.5kg. Could it be even lighter?

I think the original porsche-6 2.0 ltr flywheel would have fitted the type 1 tranny also At least that's how it looks from the one I have.
Did you loose yours or was it not with the engine?

Did not come any flywheel with the engine. I was also told that they would work.

Wasn't ready to pay over 500 Euros for just the flywheel though...
