1986 M491 911 really worth this much?
Hello fellas,
So been on the hunt for another 911 recently and someone e-mailed me about a 1986 Turbo Look M491 in Guards Red with 122k miles. He has owned the car since 1989 and it runs and drives good just needs some TLC like a nice detail and paint correction. He is in the process of sending me a couple pictures of the car and the vin #. When I finallllllly dug up some contact info and he answered he was pretty aggressive on the phone and was claiming a similar M491 sold for $200k+ on auction. I don't doubt these rare turbo look cars go for a lot of money but I've only saw them around $50-80k for cars with less than 100k miles. He said this was a 1 of 77 car for that year. Let me know what you guys think. The guy wants around $50k for it. I will update with pictures and vin whenever he sends them my way. Thanks. |

Those M491 guys think their cars are the sh|t. They’ve got the show without the go - no thanks. Don’t be fooled that a 122k mile car only needs cosmetic work, that’s a smoke screen. If you pay 50k for it, expect to be in it for well over 60k before it’s running well. Plan ahead.

Waste of time talking to any seller that brings up stupid 1 off auction sale prices.
If his car was even close to being worth that it would be at Gooding or some other auction.

M491 by itself probably adds 10k to the value over a regular car, but no more. I've been looking at them too. $50k might be reasonable depending on the condition of the rest of the car. A top end rebuild is likely on the horizon but everyone should remember that a rebuilt engine, while expensive, also adds value to the car so some of the expense will be recouped the next time it is sold.

I assume you're talking about an M491 Coupe ????
$50k is not out of the ballpark if the car's pretty straight. Its about 10 grand over a standard 86 coupe.

491 is a perfect motor swap candidate. The chassis and gearbox are already there. Just needs power. 3.8 or ? Make it reversible and keep the 3.2 with the car for future sale. Then you’d have something.

I think $50k is alright for a 491 that needs some work. They do look good.

Definitely in the 50's. +1 on the perfect swap. It's not just looks they have a lot of the other turbo goodies too.

i dont know how much that particular 911 is worth ...
i do know i just saw 260 air cooled 911s for sale on ebay the point is where you have 50k in cash to lay down plus 10k to resolve any deferred maintenance issues ... then YOU are in the position of power ... unless of course the seller is below the market (thats highly unlikely) if the seller has an attitude ? my advice ? thats a red flag, walk away, i never do business with people i dont like hold out for one that connects with YOU .... its like picking a lady friend ) you will know it when you see it, everything will fall into place, the purchasing process should be a pleasurable experience even if you over pay a nominal amount if its the right car for YOU it will be well worth it in the long run.... good luck hold out don't settle ) |

Add some Martini stripes, and spray on truck bed liner as a "light weight" interior and it will do $90 grand.

I think we're pushing nearly a year since that car's been on the market here and other places. I think the markets spoken and the price is too high.
