Am I missing something?

OK, I've been looking for almost a month now. Everyday, many times a day, I check here, the samba, graigslist, ebay, rennlist, carfinder, and any where else I run across for a decent SC in the $10K range. Is there somewhere else I should be looking?
I'm now past the SC's and going waaayyyy over my original budget and looking at 87, 88, 89's in the $15-$20 range and even at that I'm not coming up with anything that doesn't require a 2 hour drive.
I'm actually considering a one way flight if I have to. My problem is I'm then at the mercy of finding a place to look it over etc....
How is it one goes about buying a used 911 in their area (Left Coasters not included ) aside from waiting and waitng and waiting for the perfect car to come up? Is there some secret classified section that you guys are keeping from me?

Knowledge... know what you're looking for and what to look for.

Preparation... be ready to go, mentally and financially.

Patience... and lots of it.

Here' some more links to keep you busy.

Patience, indeed. I looked almost a year before I bought my first one. "Emotion is the enemy" is what Pete Zimmermann says in his book The Used 911 Story, which if you don't have it, is a must.

Good Luck!

I looked for three months before I found the "Right" car. Be patient.

You are not missing anything. I just bought "that" SC. It took me a two year search. The car I bought was in fact advertised at least twice before I went to see it so people weren't exactly beating a path to it. It was clean and had been well loved. In the time that I looked, only a few cars met my standards.

For the money I was willing to part with, only one did and I bought it. There really are not a lot of these cars in existance and you will find that some people think they are pretty special. To find a solid SC in a sub 15k price range is surprisingly difficult.

The answer is time. If you can't wait, you can find solid cars but you will probably need to pay more. Do yourself a favor and don't buy a car just becuase it is cheap. You will regret it. See the post above mine. Saxman8050 speaks from experience. Good luck and remember that the chase is part of the fun!

A few sights

http://www.porscheforsale.org/
autotrader
autotraderclassics
aol
yahoo
and cars.com Most of these sights will let you save searches so with one click you can see what you are looking for, saves a lot of time.

I found my carrera on ebay- no PPI, it was my first car and I only looked for about 3 months. I bought it knowing it needed a top end and have now found a few other issues that I will someday have to deal with. I could have found a better car if I was more patient and did a PPI but I have learned a lot and it has a very nice-interior. I am lucky the car did not have more issues.

I looked for my turbo for 6-8 months. Found it on auto trader. It was the 3rd turbo I PPI'ed. PPI's are a must, don't even think about buying a car without one. Also do some research on who is going to do the PPI.

The other thing I found; there were a few cars I looked at and initially thought they were what I wanted. But the more cars I saw I realized you really have to be patient and not make a quick decision. During your seach you will change your mind as to the car you want. There was one car I really liked except for the exterior color. Looking back I am really glad I did not buy that car. You may miss one nice car because you did not pull the trigger but another one will come along, and this is better than getting the wrong car. I have 2 P cars and wife would have no problem shooting me if I bought another, but that does not mean I don't look. I have short cuts to all kinds of sights and it is fun to just see what is out there.
