Correct Tail for 1979 911 Cabriolet
Hi Pelicans,
I have a 1979 911 Cabriolet, could someone tell me the correct period rear deck tail/wing to go on this vehicle. Anyone have pictures or better yet one for sale at a reasonable price? Thank you in advance for any and all advice. RJF |

I think the Carrera tail didn't arrive until the 3.2 Carrera, but I could be wrong. Wisdom (from a Porsche Tech Bulletin) is that you should fit front aero (splitter/spoiler) if you have a rear tail. But at least some folks have sworn their car was factory-delivered with one and not the other.

Porsche never offered a Cabriolet in '79, so go with any tail you like!

Ralph,
The only tail you could have ordered from the factory for a '79 SC is a one-piece all rubber tail that isn't all that attractive and is quite heavy also. Porsche started supplying turbo style tails in 1982. In 1980, they made a Weissach edition that used a tail similar to the '75-'77 turbos, except it didn't have the second vent grill that the turbo tails used. The Carrera tails were first used in 1984. My suggestion would be to find one of these Weissach-style tails. Factory tails are a lot better quality than aftermarket tails, although they are more expensive to buy. The aftermarket tails are usually a lot of work (and expense) to get fitted to a car. The rubber lip on the rearr of these tails is getting hard to find and quite pricey, so make sure of the condition of anything you find. JR |

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I was curious how the Weissach tail mentioned in an earlier reply would look on a late-80s Carrera? I know the Carrera tail is period correct, but I like the look of the Weissach tail. I'm not sure if it'll look right on a later car, however.

I think it would look fine. An SC and Carrera look essentially the same, apart from the fog lights.
