Pricing Advice for Long time dreamer, First time buyer

I'm negotiating the purchase of an 88 Guards Red on Black coupe currently and could use some pricing advice.

The car has 174k miles, does not smoke or leak, and has been maintained by a mechanic I've known for years, but I am still slightly put off by the miles. Are these cars pretty solid at high mileage? I do own an '86 325E with 299k miles that has been a great car. Cost

The car also looks to have had some repair work done on the left front (looks like the hood and left fender were replaced), but the carfax is clean and the car looks straight underneath. Cosmetically it is very clean and I'd give it a solid 8.5

Original asking price from the buyer was $22k and I am hoping for 20k, but we haven't finished talking yet. I'd love for someone to tell me if I'm on the right path, or overpaying.

Thank you in advance!

These cars run forever but have the car PPId by a Porsche expert. $20k might not be a bargain on a car w/ even minor needs. Mint G50 Carreras are $ 30,000 to $40,000 cars with the #2 type car selling for $27,000 to $30,000. This car sounds like it is a nice car but you need to make sure whether it is a $20,000 car or a $20,000 car with needs. Example A/C blows warm this can be $2,000 to $4,000 to repair. Transaxle boots need replacement, shocks, brakes, and other seemingly minor details can add up at a professional shop. Good luck....

Luke is correct stating how $20k might not be a bargain on even a car with minor needs.

I'd offer 15-16 and see what happens.

You would need a lot of repair records to justify a car with that mileage and an accident history fetching over $20k.

$15-17 is more in line with the market, depending on condition.

Thank you for the input so far. I forgot to mention that the car will be getting a PPI tomorrow morning by AASE Motors here in Southern CA.

Assuming the car checks out 100% on the PPI, would $20-21k be far too much?

The buyer is under the impression that the car would be an easy sell at $23k after talking to the people at AutoKennel

I would see if 20-21k was a possibility before I spent the $$$ on a PPI. Also, the car won't be 100% on the PPI so don't go in expecting that. The best you can hope for is they only tell you what you already know problem wise (accident damage) + other relatively minor things.

A G50 coupe with way less miles recently sold on the forum for 21.5k. It had some needs but good miles (less than 100k) , good records, original body/paint, and a fair amount of new parts being included with it.

AutoKennel would not ask that much unless the car was very, very nice. They recently sold a high mileage Guards Red G50 Carrera for under $20,000. Last car on this link.

Current Tenants

Paul is a great guy with his finger on the pulse of the market. If the seller sold through AKennel he would have to pay Paul a commission.....

What is 100% on a PPI? How deep are they going to delve into the minor systems.

Remember you are looking at one car in a market of many cars of its type. Be patient, very patient.

I have the seller at 21k right now, and I know the PPI won't come back perfect, but assuming it doesn't have any major flaws. The person doing the PPI is an old friend and has been maintaining the car over the last 2 owners, so hopefully he'll be very thorough.

The car is a really nice car aside from the miles/previous damage, but I do agree that it seems a bit optimistic. I'll put a call in to Autokennel to pick Paul's brain a bit.
