Any 1978 Porsche 930 Owners Out There

Hi

I just bought a 1978 Porsche 930. It's been sitting for a while, do not know about the engine status yet. Key was lost so waiting on the key from Porsche. I am excited about the color the is code number 291, which I cannot find, some say it looks like Ice Green Mettallic but not a color offered in 1978.

The wheels are wrong, they are later Porsche 18 inch but I do not mind them. It needs cleaned up, but any idea on how many of these were build? Anybody else have one of these cars. It has white leather interior, door panels have ugly white speakers that look wrong, green carpet that needs replaced. It's also a non sunroof car, are they more rare.

Thanks for the discussion.

My thoughts on what I see..

Color does appear to be Ice Green.. was a fairly popular color in the 70's..
I had both a 76 911 and a 77 in that color. I have seen it on 77 Turbo Carreras and on a 79 Turbo. I wouldn't exactly call it rare. As far as the color code, not sure what 291 is either.. but Ice green was code 250 for 75-76 and 266 for 77.

Also, keep in mind that Porsche in the 70's was still a small manufacturer, they could care less what color you wanted.. it you wanted pink, you could have it. All you had to do was put down a hefty deposit with your order and wait for the car. For them, it was all about moving units, not about making cars that would be rare in the future.. they didn’t care. Most special order colors got the 99 paint to sample code.. if it was a Porsche color previously used they just got that code.. although in later years I think they began to use 99 code even for older Porsche colors being applied to current models.
I’ve also seen several Turbos and 911s over the years with white leather interior like yours.. I don’t think it was wildly popular, but some wanted to be different. The sunroof was an option on these cars, there was no “sunroof delete option” available as some like to insinuate these days. If you wanted a s/r you ordered it, if you didn’t, you did nothing. Again, I’m not so sure this makes the car rare, although there were definitely fewer built for the US without a s/r.

Yep, the wheels are wrong. I think I’d swap them for 17” factory style Fuchs in the proper widths.

My car is also a 78, number 2 of the 930s built for the US that year in petrol blue w/ cork

If I were you, I clean it up, get it running well and enjoy it!

Wow, thanks for advice.

I did check the paint code again 291? But what you say about color makes much sense.
I love your color of blue/cork.....picture please.

I am now told only 461 1978 930 imported to the US. Of the 461 only a few had no sunroof, because frankly most wanted a s/r. I ordered the COA , still might not say color or paint to sample.

I call our cars rare simply by the amount made, under 1000 units, mine is 414 of 461. I know most Porsche numbers are small but there are not many of these cars. Our 1978 is nice too because it's a noncatalic converter, in later years must have....this is why it did not met 1980 EPA requirements or NITSA requirements.

I am not a big fan of green/ white but have not decided what to do with the car yet.

Magnus' car is more of a mint green, it's lighter and less blue. I've seen a near color called Neptune Green. Here it is on a '92 I once had. Sorry, I do not have the code.

Yes, 461 is the correct number.. we were tracking that car at one point about a year ago as it was up for sale.. it was verified as the last 78 produced.. I had looked at my numbers think that my car was #12, but it turned out to be #2 of of the US run for 78We have not been able to locate car number #1 as yet.

You are correct in that most of the US car have the sunroof option. A lot of the dealers just added it knowing that they could charge for it and that the cars would sell anyway.

I was going to do the COA for my car.. but the cute sounding ladies couldn't give me enough reliable info to justify spending the money for it. They had to research it, verified that it was #2 with its early production date.. then told me it was a 99 met paint to sample, when clearly it is, and has always been Petrol Blue which is a color offered for 78. Maybe its because of the early production. She then went on to say that it had beige/tan interior.. however its cork.. and has never been changed. I have heard from others that the COA can be wonky sometimes either missing info or having incorrect info. Again, back in the day it was all about moving the units.. not so much documenting what the unit was or had. I plan to follow-up with them for research on the build through the kardex @ Porsche AG.

As far as the color of your car, it looks great when done in a proper base/clear coat.. I would clean-up that interior and see what it looks like with paint sparkling. It still may be a little odd and if so, grey or dark green looks really good with that exterior color.

We had a 77 930 at the shop that has the original interior, dark green leather, with Ice green interior.. the car is beautiful. I'll try to find a pic of that one too.

I'm not sure why you would thing this? Magnus' car is a 77 930 and its the same color as wgwollet's car.

The color you've posted is either Wimbledon green or "the name escapes me" but there is another color very similar and both were available starting in the 90's, I almost bought a 91 965 Turbo in that color.

Magnus's car pictured...

Hi

Hi Matt

Umm...yes, I need to drive it, that's all the FUN.

Onboost

Did you say the car was for sale before? Did not know that...
Your COA comments are true, I have a couple COA's that are wrong. I got them mainly for the VIN to engine to prove matching numbers.
But I thought Kardex are no longer available from Porsche.

Ok

You were tracking 461, I see, do you have a data base of all 78 930? Is there a 930 Forum?

Hi

Someone on another post said .....that green was Ferry Porsches favorite color?

Meet two other 1978 930 guys, both no s/r, so maybe not that rare, one is all black number 441, the other black matte number not given.

Well color perception can vary. To me, this is the color match. I don't have the code, though.

Techweenie.. we're gonna have to get you a high resolution screen or something bro... cause your color perception is really varying.

The Turbo you have now posted is blue.. and I've seen it in person as it was a local car until sold.

I think what may be throwing the color on wgwollet's car is that its parked uinder a tree and the shading throws some variance to the color.

wgwollet, do you have any other pics yet.. body interior engine?

Thanks,

I'm colorblind so I can't offer any comment other than the car in the original post looks darker than Ice Green.

More pics!

Gang

I will go take some and post, I now have it in my garage, very dirty. The key is lost and I want to unlock the steering wheel to get it outside, but waiting on key...to do a wash.

I am still in a hunt on that dam color code of 291, but who knows, the car has been outside, and I asked this before, the sun, per Techweenie has baked off the black on the trim, because it's now chrome. Should be black I think.

I meant to tell you the other day.. If you have a good locksmith in your town, he will have or can get the proper Porsche key blank. Take off one of the door handles and take the lock cylinder out and take it over to him. He can make you a key from that. If you do remove the cylinder.. you must be careful to not let the slides come out of place.. or you can just take the whole door handle over and let the locksmith disassemble and cut you a key. Of course you could also just send it out to Tony @ Home | LockAndKeyID.Com

I still say that car is Ice Green... and yes, she's been sitting which means you've got some work/cleaning to do.

You may as well start a new thread on the Turbo forum and add a link to this one... I have feeling you'll be spending a lot of time over there.. and they/we know these cars.

I am the one who bought the 461. It went to my home in Canada and I've driven 8k miles already on top of original 27,xxx miles.

The car has been modified exactly the way I would have done it (except the gearbox which is now properly built and strengthened 915) and it is my favourite and proper Porsche. Next Thursday I am going for another long 4 day trip with my wife who loves this car also.

So, it is the last one built in 1978 for US. Does it have any practical significance?

And, by the way, my car has a sunroof!
I like sunroofs a lot.
