911 G50 Targa value?

Looking at a silver - black 1988 targa. Under 50 K on the clock. One owner last 16 years and maintained by a dealer. I don't know if dealer maintained is good or bad for a a G50.

I have been looking for a targa keeper.

Plan to have a PPI done. Did all g50 need valve guides ~ 50K miles?

What is the ballpark value?

Thanks for the quick reply.

I bought my 89 coupe with just less than 90k on it. It have a top end done at 85K and while they were in there the PO had the bottom end done too. The better question is - what are the chances that a top end will need to be done on a 50K mile engine? Other that smoke at start up, any other test for valve guides? Leakdown?

Dave,
You have been here for four years. That's long enough for you to answer your own question. But I have a question for you: What took you so long to figure out the perfect "go anywhere, do anything" car?

Thanks for the reply Richard. I think I have a valid question. The guy I bought my 89 from put $20 k into repairs engine rebuild, shocks, heater motors, transmission fork upgrade etc.at 80k miles. I can handle the typical wear items. What I can't handle is any major engine rebuilds because the owner is asking a premium price.

My question stands on the valve guides. Yeah, the owner can tell you it does burn any oil, never missed a shift etc. ... yeah right.

Not trying to piss anyone off, just trying to justify an expensive purchase.

Not all 3.2 valve guides went bad. You can get some indication of engine condition by looking at HC emissions numbers. But the best test is usually oil consumption over time. Really bad valve guides will cause engine oil smoke on acceleration after a long downhill stretch.

Welcome to the (Happy Targa) Owners Club! And I hope you have some more clear weather days to enjoy her. As you know, clear & cold is perfect weather for a Targa.

Man, looks like a really clean car. Every time I see a Targa in that color reminds me that I need to stick with that color on my repaint - and also, when I see a car like yours makes me want to sell start over, sell everything, save more money, and find a car as clean as that (ie buy the right car in the first place). A keeper - nice purchase.

I believe that the original targas with the bar will be much more popular once the rich kids get their new 991 targa - bye bye to the oversized moon roof, hello to the concept that Dr. Porsche introduced.
