Sold my 1983 SC after a 10 year love affair.

Hello,

I decided to part with my 911sc after 10 years. This car was definitely a joy to own and drive. I'm a bit sad having to let her go but it's time for a change.

I've been surfing online looking at what these cars are selling for these days and WHOA!!! I was surprised that the avg asking price for these babies are at the $20K+ range.

I'm a bit dumbfounded in selling mine for a mere $15K

The following are the condition of the car when sold.

169K+ miles

Upgrades through the years

high torque starter
generator 2 yrs old
new rebuilt transmission installed February 2014
new tires Bridgestones
new fuel pump
original bosch cd unit replaced with permatune

Need attention

1. drivers side window not working (need new regulator
2. sun roof needs work. will not open when closed all the way.
Have to loosen mounts to slide back about 1 inch then it will open. Need to leave about an inch open to be able to open and close (but not all the way)

3. AC not working
4. I now know that the car had been in an accident before I owned it (discovered later) driver's side door replaced, left side painted. but the car rode true and straight all these years.

5. Drivers side seat leather ripped due to wear and tear.

So in light of the above, should I feel ok selling @ $15K?

Carl

p.s. Now in the market for a 993.

Sounds like he already sold the car. You could've probably gotten another $5-10k for it, but as long as you're satisfied thats all that matters.

Sale not yet final...

Thanks guys for responding.

Here's the deal..

The buyer left a deposit. He will be sending a transporter to pick up the car this coming Tuesday along with the balance of payment.

As I mentioned before, we agreed on $15k. This was before I did any market research on the fair value of these cars.

The last couple of days, I've had some time to surf online to see the fair market values and was surprised at how much these cars are going for. In light of this information and from your feedbacks, I am considering calling the buyer for renegotiation to a more fairer transaction.

1983 911sc
169300 miles

Upgrades:

1. New rebuilt transmission and clutch February 2014
2. New fuel pump January 2015
3. valve adjustment w/new valve cover and seals
4. generator 2 years old
5. replaced old bosch cd unit with permatune December 2013
6. New Bridgestone Potenza tires. July 2014
7. replaced leaking thermostat sensor when transmission replaced

Need Attention:

1. Driver's side window not working (may need new regulator) window motor is fine.
2. Sunroof left side cable need replacement.
3. AC needs attention (o rings replacement) compressor is ok.
4. Paint look good on the pics but closer inspection will show rock chips in front, a scratch on the right passenger rear fender. Paint bubble on the left rear side panel about 1.5" in diameter (a little rust spot)
5. Driver's side seat ripped. definitely needs reupholstery.

Other details:

The motor is strong and sound. This car has been my daily driver and is very dependable.

Discovered later after I purchased in 2005, The car has been in an accident, I know now that the drivers side door has been replaced and the car has been repainted at least once. In light of this accident, The car rides straight and true. It has a clean title.

Since I have a couple of days before the transaction if final, I'm looking for more feedback from you to help me decide whether to renegotiate or not.

Here are some photos of the car:

Thank you in advance for your feedbacks.
Carl

You and your buyer agreed on a price. You have a deal in play.
Check the laws in your state, but if there's been a deposit paid, that deal is binding.

That you didn't do your research before selling is unfortunate and may it serve as an expensive lesson in how not to sell your car.

Even if this is legally permitted, you might give some thought to how this reflects on your personal integrity. I was raised to believe that a person should keep her/his word. If the potential $5k+ is worth more than your honor, by all means, go ahead and try to squeeze out the last $5k+ out of your buyer.

I'm a big believer in car karma and maybe in letting this go, you'll be 'allowed' to snag a deal a few $k below market value on your next ride. In the end, that $5k+ is inconsequential if you're dabbling in the Porsche world.

The car could have brought $17 to $17.5K, IMO. Not $20K.
Also my opinion: the difference is infinitesimal balanced against the value of your word.

This is unfortunately wishful thinking. List that car for 17k and itll be sold in a day. $20k+ isnt unreasonable these days.

I also have to agree that you made a verbal contract with the buyer and he left a deposit. Unless its a dealer or flipper, then go ahead and up the price

You did the right thing, you will feel better for that than going the other way.

I agree that you need to keep your word. But remember that it is a two way street. If he shows up, picks it apart and says now he will only pay $10 or $12 that's your out. You tell him to walk. If he comes back and responds to that with,"well ok, I'll do $15." Tell him to get lost.
Then fix some little things and bring it to market higher. No reason for you to be a victim. Buying and selling is a lot about feel. Feel the guy out and see who you think he really is.
Might turn out to be a great person excited for the chance to own a 911 and ready to give your baby a good home. If he's that guy a few thousand won't matter in the long run.

I had a seller that was in your shoes many years ago. It was an E36 M3 that was priced great but not a screaming deal. I gave them my deposit and they gave me their word. As I was heading out to pick it up I get a call and they wanted me to either cough up another 3k or they would sell it to another fellow who offered them more. I said no thanks and to please return my deposit but hoped they would do the right thing. In the end they did as they did not want to sell their integrity for a few thousand bucks.

I applaud you for honoring your word.

Like Matt said, if the buyer gives you a counter offer, then you are in your right to step back.

I think the price is low. I say a deal is a deal. I had an agreement on a 78 last year and the person sold it to another person that same night. I was picking it up the next day. Luckily he didn't want a deposit. Either way I really thought it was rude to sell a car we had an agreed price on.

If he try's to renogiate you don't need to sell it to him. Tell him to move on. Otherwise you do need to sell the car for the agreed upon price.
