Best Market to sell a 69 911E Sporto?

I was just wondering what the best market might be for my 69E ROW Sportomatic? It’s a Japanese invoice 1/69, Karmann body built sent to Mitsuwa Motors then. Vin is 002X or in the first 20-30 911E production line. It could be the first 911E Sporto off the line, but how to know that, or would anyone care?

Selling a Mitsuwa dealer car in Japan would command a 30% increase compared to a normal import on 911 i.e. grey car. I realize Sporto is stigmatized in US, and a bit in Japan, don’t know about Europe (Germany). As a ROW car, I thought maybe Germany might be interested. Certainly anyway, there might be an older guy with only two legs, middle and right that would love to drive a Sporto because he could still drive a 911E 69. Moreover, a collector might want this car due to its vintage and low miles too 43k KM.

A friend from college said the other day that during the buying frenzy, everybody that wanted a classic early 911 got one. Now, the remaining buyers are guys that want the odd ball rare car, like this one. Do you agree? Should I sell or keep it longer? I don’t necessarily need the money. Will Sporto ever come into its own niche without the stigma?

It is a driver, and needs interior, body and paint. Car does drive and is mechanically sound so to speak. Light Ivory, and has a later addition factory alloy deck lid. It does need a front floor pan, but I have those parts I bought new, just haven’t done it. I did a quick, FRP patch job to get safety inspection here at local DMV a couple years ago – another story.

I forgot to mention its left hand drive, matching numbers and it's got the James Bond 007 raised letter H1 lenses. That's gonna turn some heads don't you think?

Its old, its rare and its a 911. Whats a similar 69 E in similar condition worth? $40K? 60K? not sure anymore with the bubble these cars are under.. Also not sure the Sporto adds or detracts.. Rare doesn't always mean valuable afterall.

in the US, the best place is an auction.. BAT (bring a Trailer) or consign the sale to someone who has the ability to market it correctly.

Sporto used to be the kiss of death. And many of them were converted as a result. Rarity and uniqueness seems to have raised their values more on par with a manual car in recent years. I don’t ever expect them to be worth more than a comparable manual.

You ever punch holes in that aluminum deck lid? That thread was our first ever interaction Bernie. I gave you shyte for hand wringing and just said,”drill baby, drill!”

No Matt, never drilled it. Sorry I gave you Sh-t for that! I have three of those alloy factory lids now and I wouldn't consider drilling any of them, one of which has the factory hole for wiper option. I'll keep the best one for the 911e sporto. Seems to be a narrow market for the other two here (pun intended). Don't know what to do with them other than keep them on the shelf. One day I may figure it out.

Probably best sold in East Timor, ever since they opened it up for commerce they've been on a Sporto buying spree

Thank you racer for the good advice and US perspective. I wish I were there, but light years away and time zones too. We have our auctions here, and nation wide they are the way to go. For instance, I could drive to HAA auction in 20 minutes from my house in Ashiya. They sell 5-6000 cars on site every Saturday. That’s where I’d do it if I could, but momentarily I have to get some extra paperwork for that on title – long story. I guess that is why I’m thinking of other markets other than Japan. To do it here will take much more time – on title to domestically register it or sell it at auction. Otherwise, my title is clear to export. Weird title system they have here.

Last year in October we had a direct hit on a big Typhoon in Kobe/Osaka. The storm surge flooded Rokko Island which is just near us off a bridge. A Ferrari dealership got flooded and so did 53 Ferraris. It was all over the news, so a couple weeks later I went to the dealership. It was empty of cars and personnel, but one guy was out cleaning the debris off the road out front. Turns out he was the manager. I said I was looking for a water damaged Ferrari, so he tells me there are 3 going at HAA today. I went there to find 3 brand new 488s that had been salt watered up to the top of the dash i.e. instrument panel and all at start price of 1 million yen. I got excited thinking I might peg one for 1.5 million, saying whose going to buy these?? I called a few friends who buy at that auction and later in the evening learned that they all sold for 10 million each i.e. 100k. Good f-cking luck I said to myself and everyone. I thought later that Ferrari bought them just to keep them off the market on parts or whatever.

If I can, I’ll post a couple of pix of the water tempting to wash over the wall in front of the house off the estuary from my 3rd story balcony. Maybe a couple of shipping containers that were blown off the island or ships that washed up on our beach, a 5 minute walk from here.

Hi Dmitry,
Tomorrow in the mountains I'll send some pix, give you what I have. Small disclaimer, that is, I never took many pix of the car to this day, except while working on it. I do have a few while driving it on dealer plates.

I'll post them tomorrow,

Regards,
bernie

I remember this day, the day a chain tensioner went out. That's why I took these photos while waiting for my Kiwi neighbor to come and tow me back to roost a couple of miles away. Fortunately this happened just before the only stop light within miles. I'd just gotten the MFI pump back from Mark Jung, and I was punishing the motor, foot into it, then braking hard, back and forth. Italian tune up?

So many on this forum had told me, change out the original chain tensioners. I didn't listen, and fortunately I was lucky. Thereafter I found a NOS 930 set on yahoo Japan auction for about 700usd.

Sorry these photos aren't so great. If I get inspired, I may snap a few in the morning down in storage say interior etc. It's due to be started up just to keep the batteries charged and brought up to temperature.

How about a goat? Oh! I just realized, Billy might take tat little thing right off there! To be honest, my daughter wouldn't be satisfied with you. She would need a real man, someone who at least has the emotional maturity of a 14 year old.

Keep hitting those Pelican events! The more you hang with Porsche people the better. The vast majority are mature human beings.

You shouldn't have to pee in water bottles at home, I'll ring your wife and see if I can talk her into letting you use the toilet. Pics of daughter needed, see if she's up to my standards.

Dayuuummmnnn, I was missing some choice asshattery in this thread (wouldn't you know it's a thread about a lowly Sporto, even!!! ).

I can't figure out what the backstory is here, though - all this talk of d*** licking and daughter/wife shenanigans seems really random without a backstory for clarification!

Short version is Bernie asks prices and AMG trolls his threads because he never sells anything.
