As a price point, I sold a similar engine ( bit more complete and a '74 non-S) for $3k late last year.

I would think you could get 3k for this engine. I would start an ad at 4k here in the Pelican classifieds.
Understanding the Pelican classified section is a reverse auction, people will start bidding on it through PM's till you get a number close to 3k. Or you could list it on E-bay and have a auction that goes the other way, then start at 2k and it will get to 3k or maybe over. I would pay $1.500.00 for this engine in a heart beat, knowing two people who will pay that amount let's you know it would sell higher than that. Good luck. |
Great info. Thanks guys!
Another question: examining the head studs, are these inserts factory or an add on? If add on what are they? Time cert, helicoil? I have no idea.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1512744144.jpg |
This boat anchor is NOT a comp to this engine:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-used-parts-sale-wanted/971901-fs-2-7-engine-core-2500-a.html Otherwise there are two 76 takeouts out there at $4500, and a 75 at $5k. Then there's a Farmers built RS spec engine on carbs for $10k. There are two cases for between $1500-2500 and several cranks in the $800-1000 range. Puma, those are time certs. The buyer of your engine may be able to avoid sending the case off to Ollies for $3k of machine work. Cases that have been to Ollies and are ready to build are generally being offered in the $4500-6000 range. |
Call Ollies. Perhaps they have the engine serial on record. It's a long shot, but that might be a phone call worth several thousand.

If I were in the market for another 2.7, i would offer $3.5K-$4K for your engine. Regardless of the stated condition, it is still an unknown and I would also think of it as a core.

2) That's fine to subtract. You can find a CIS depending on the month, for around $500. This has not changed since 2012. People have hoarded them, then have decided to move on. Some go for much cheaper. Depends on who wants one. 3) You are forgetting that all these parts probably are good. They are probably all rebuildable parts. Many engines on here are suspect. Who knows what's going on with them. 4) Yeah, a nice fan and housing now costs $1K. Alternators are worth next to nothing, even rebuilt. A shroud, oil cooler, etc, can be found. If you really wanted one of these, some decent people around here would give you a break for your own motor I am sure and help you out. Most mufflers on these supposed 'running' motors on here are junk. 5) I think $3K is reasonable for these parts nowadays. If he wants to get what Matt says it's worth, which he may very well be able to, he'll probably need to hold on to it for a few months. Holidays and winter mean nothing on pricing, because this is when most people build their motor for spring. Sure you can get lucky. There are still quite of few 2.7s under tarps, in sheds, in the corners of garages - running take-outs that people replaced with 3.0s when they had the time, energy, and money. They are out there. For me I am waiting for one that doesn't cost a ton and has some documents as a spare. I like the 2.7 CIS engine. I will not put a 3.0 or something else in my '75. |

toss it in the classifieds with a 4500 ask and see what happens. If you get chirping crickets for 2 days you know you are too high. Is the crank included and magnafluxed/ checked etc? That is a chuck of $ right there.
It's a 77, not a 73S or a '66' family engine (663/664 or 665 are 2.7 RS engines). Yours is not the best engine to make a hot rod out of, demand is rather limited. That is really all it is, supply and demand. |
Doesn't look like the engine serial number is stamped in the usual way or in the usual place.
