Value of 2.7 engine?

Hi guys,

I need to sell this 2.7. I think this photo shows all the parts but not exactly sure right now. I bought this engine from a factory Porsche mechanic who threw out any part that wasn’t in Spec. Everything disassembled, clean, and ready to be put back together.

Thanks for your help!

Really? Please explain, or are you pulling my leg?

It's a 77 core longblock in pieces. No fan, shroud, tin, cooler or injection. It's just the block. Some mechanic once said it was good stuff. I buy this engine I am measuring and inspecting every part over again and no doubt sending some of it out for machine work. I'm probably going to spend $5k just getting the block, heads, and rotating assembly done.

Matt, to be clear, I’m looking for a guideline asking price to sell the engine, not what it would take to build it.

And it wasn’t just some random mechanic, this guy was factory trained expert in these engines. He has an impeccable reputation across fifty years of Porsches.

I wasn't quoting what it would take to put back together. It's a core in pieces. You can sell it for $4-5k. If you don't believe me, go look at the last 60 days of the classifieds. There have been 6-8 2.7s in various condition for sale. Make your own assessment.

It is a random mechanic. He didn't sign his name to it. He didn't write down his measurements on each thing to be used. Whatever work he did making sure it was right is lost to the ages. It doesn't matter. It's just a core that's probably mostly in spec.

My $5k number was machine work. Buy this core for $5k and do $5k of machine work and you're a good way there. With all the missing stuff, it's likely $15-20k to build this engine.

Well thank you for your response, I sincerely appreciate you. That’s much higher than I thought it would be. I looked through the classifieds and saw a bunch of dirty, condition unknown engines. I see what you mean.

Frankly, I'd be hard pressed to pay $4K. But I'm sure others would. Everybody's different.

Buying a motor in pieces is rolling the dice...

Hard sell...

Suspect anyone buying it will make an extremely conservative offer...

Good luck...

+1

Unless there’s an implicit guarantee here by the seller these are known good parts.

nathanbs 12-07-2017 06:05 PM

I’ll offer $1200-1500 in all seriousness assuming there is a crankshaft included

Matt Monson 12-07-2017 06:49 PM

A 7r case is worth $1500. That offer is a joke.

Jeff Alton 12-08-2017 12:36 AM

I think 4-5K, like Matt says, makes a fair deal for both parties.

Yeah, I haven't seen prices like this - since forever. Not even in 2012 before the boom.
