VIN Question

Hi,

I'm looking at an 84 911 Targa and the VIN is coming up online as not being valid. The seller has sent over a picture and it looks ok but Carfax and other online companies are recognizing it as valid.

Here is the VIN: WP0EB091XES100653

Any ideas what is up?

Just looked up the vin and it comes up as a 2014 model. Use the link below to plug in the vin #

It could be an 84 VIN. Look at this VIN decoder below. Slot 10 is an E, that is a 1984 or 2014

It’s the X that’s odd when I look it up. Sure that’s not a Z?

X is a valid Checksum # (position 9), but I'm not going to calculate it...

Along with the # 0 to 9.

Checksum is for North America car only so the Euro/RoW use Z as a filler digit.

On my 84 targa the "x" is a "9". Otherwise just the last 6 digits are different from mine.

Guys,
How about a decoder for a six digit VIN?
I’m trying to determine if I have a 1965 or 1966 chassis.
I have it written as 903229, but I figure it must be 303229. Car is in my warehouse so not easy to confirm the data tag (though I will). Where should I look to determine the manufactured date?
Thanks!
George

The engine number would start with a 9, chassis with a 3.

If 903229 is the engine number, the chassis number for that engine would most likely be in the range of 302900 to 303010.

The last Solex-equipped 911 was 903910. The car matching your engine would have been a mid-year 66. But it could have been built in calendar '65. You need the Kardex to confirm all.

303390 is generally accepted as the end of 1965 chassis numbers.

I was under the impression US would only have a number for check digit? That’s why I asked about the Z, which would have been the one used in Europe. Any thoughts?

Yes, 0-9 and X, I'll take another look at the formula but in one place it does mentioned that if it add up to 10 you put an X (Roman for 10). No sure why there is a 0 unless its any other "0" finishing numbers (like 20).

Let me crack a bottle of Scotch and see if I come up with something better

Took me a while to figure out that the "C" they are talking about was for Checksum as I never seen a C in that position.

Guys,
I was able to take a look at the vin tag today. Not really sure where my previous 903xxx number came from as the vin plate is 302425.
As best I can tell this appears to suggest my race car is in fact a 1965. Would you agree?
Thanks
George

Built in '65 but considered a '66 model

That's a 1965 car and the number you previously mentioned could be the engine number for that same car. As I said previously, MY66 chassis didn't start until 303390, much later than yours.

ping DJpateman Dave keeps a database. He's always happy to provide information as well as would like to add your car to his list. He can help with letting you know what month your car was made.

+1 although I have to say this topic has been beaten to death.
Any chassis number from 302001 is considered a 66. Chassis through 303390 was built in 65, but considered a 66.
This is all here in the United States where your car will be titled as a 66 , over in Germany they never understood our method of dating model years. They consider all chassis up to 303390 a '65.
